Physics Class MMT 1C

Energy

Energy

The ability to cause change

Anything that causes change must have

energy

Different forms of energy

1.

Electrical

1.

Chemical

2.

Radiant

3.

Thermal

Thermal Energy

Energy from heat.

Electrical Energy

A flow of electrons

Chemical Energy
Energy

stored in
the chemical
bonds of
substances.
(food, gasoline)

Radiant Energy

Energy from the sun.

Kinetic Energy
Energy of motion or movement

Kinetic Energy Cont

Depends on the objects mass and speed

Measured in Joules (J)

Kinetic Energy Equation

KE = 1/2mv2

Potential Energy

ELASTIC POTENTIAL ENERGY

Stored energy

Energy that is stored by

something that stretches or
compresses like a spring

Chemical Potential Energy

Energy stored in chemical bonds.
(Ex: gasoline, food...)

In gasoline, the energy is released

when the gas is burned

Gravitational Potential Energy

Energy stored by objects due to

their position above the surface of
the Earth (GPE)
Depends on the mass and height
of an object.

Gravitational Potential Energy

Formula

GPE = mgh

m = mass (kg)
g = acceleration of gravity, 9.8 m/s2
H = height of the object (m)

Mechanical Energy

The total amount of kinetic and potential energy in a system

Formula for Mechanical Energy:

Mechanical energy = potential energy + kinetic energy
ME = PE + KE

Kinetic and Potential Energy

In projectile motion, energy transforms between potential and kinetic.

The Law of Conservation of Energy

Energy is not created or

destroyed, but can change from
one form to another.

Converting Mass into Energy

Nuclear fusion: Two nuclei are

fused together, transforming some
of the mass into energy.

Takes place in the sun and other

stars.

Converting Mass into Energy

Nuclear fission: An atom is split

apart releasing some mass in the
form of energy.
The total amount of energy is still
conserved.
Energy in = Energy out.
