Common Core Teaching TIPS

Close Reading of
the Cover Story
Support close reading by following
these steps.

Read for Understanding

Have students study the photos and

read the captions in TFKs Pictures
of 2014. Discuss important facts and
details: Why was a particular event
included? What can you tell about
it from looking at the photo? What
purpose do the captions serve?

of 2014. Have them write a nonfiction narrative that tells the story
behind the photo. Encourage them
to use sequence words such as first,
next, before, after, and finally.

RI.3.9, W.3.3
Grade 4: RI.4.1, RI.4.5, RI.4.7,

Craft and Structure

How does the structure of the

Pictures of 2014 cover story
compare to other articles in TFK?
Why is the story organized in this
way? How would you organize it?

Integration of Knowledge and Ideas

Tell students that a photo editor

finds photos to go with stories. TFK
photo editor Don Heiny says, I
choose a photo that adds information
and impact to the story. Discuss:
How can a photo add information
and impact to a story? Have students
use a photo in TFK as an example.
Discuss the photos included in
Pictures of 2014. What emotions
do they convey? What in the photos
brings out those emotions? Which
photo do you think is the most
powerful, and why?

or otherwise use any entry submitted in connection with this
Contest. All federal, state, and local laws and regulations apply.
