1. Objective: The student will be able to find and compare different parts of a map through using
a map key and an alphanumeric grid.
2. Content Standard: Third grade, Social Studies (Geography), physical and political maps have
distinctive characteristics and purposes; places can be located on a map by using the title, key,
alphanumeric grid and cardinal directions.
3. Motivation: The children will need to have a basic understanding of how to use a map key and
alphanumeric grid. In order to find different animals on the map of the zoo and compare
different parts of the zoo, then they will need to have this basic understanding. The goal of the
lesson is to have the children locate and compare different things on a map through using a map
key and the alphanumeric grid. At the end of the lesson they will have a deeper understanding of
how to interpret a map through using a map key and alphanumeric grid.
4. Instructional materials:
-Map of the zoo (from http://www.zsl.org/zsl-whipsnade-zoo)
-A Sick Day for Amos McGee by Philip C. Stead
-Worksheet with questions related to the map
5. Procedures:
-I will begin the lesson by reading A Sick Day for Amos McGee and asking the students if
they have ever been to a real zoo before.
-I will tell them that today we are going to go to Amos zoo by looking at it from a
birds eye view on a map.
-I will hand out the map to all of the students. Then I will ask them if they can find
where the map key is. I will ask them to talk with a partner and discuss what a map key
is and why it is useful.
-I will ask them if they can find the alphanumeric grid on the map. I will ask them to
share with a partner again what an alphanumeric grid is and how it helps them find
certain things on a map.
-The students will work with their partners and use the maps of the zoo to answer the
questions on the worksheet. While the students are working together in pairs, I will go
around the room to see if there are any misconceptions or confusion among the students.

-After the students have answered the questions on the worksheet, then they will meet
with another pair of students to compare their answers and see if they are the same.
-I will collect the worksheets at the end of the lesson to see if the students understood
how to use the map key and alphanumeric grid to answer the questions.
6. Academic Vocabulary:
-There will be no new vocabulary words for the lesson; however, two key vocabulary
words will be reinforced in this lesson. These are the map key and the alphanumeric grid.
7. Assessment and Evaluation:
-During the lesson, I will go around the room to make sure that the students understand
how to use a map key and alphanumeric grid to answer the questions on the worksheet.
-After the lesson, I will collect the worksheets and look at the answers to see if the
students understood how to use the map key and alphanumeric grid to find and compare
different parts of the map.
8. Reflection:

We are going to go to Amos McGees zoo for the day and visit with some of his friends. Can you help me
find where his friends and other parts of the zoo are located? You will need to use the alphanumeric
grid to tell me which section they are in by saying what letter and number they are located in. For
example, the axis deer is in section A2 of the zoo. Also, dont forget to look at the map key if you need
help finding where other parts of the zoo are located. Good luck and try not to get a cold!
