Fredic Jones developed his

Positive Classroom
Management theory to help
teachers address student
behaviour problemss by
promoting positive behaviour

1. Classroom management procedures must be:

a) Positive: They must be gentle, affirm the student, and set limits
b) Economical: They must be practical, simple, and easy to use once
they are mastered. Must reduce Ts workload
2. Classroom management has four groups of fundamental skills:
a) Developing classroom structures: rules, procedures, and physical
arrangements
b) Remaining calm and using body language to set limits
c) Teaching students cooperation and responsability
3. Time and its allocation are important resources for teachers

Physical and Psychological Foundations

True goals of the classroom managements system:

management of behaviour + emotions, self esteem,
values, and relationship building

Teachers should not

- Assume autocratic roles
- Demand strict obedience
- Threaten or try to control through fear
- Treat all students equally as much as possible
Instead, teachers should
- See students as individuals who are worthy of respect
- Assume that learners will be responsible and worthy of being
treated with dignity

Teachers Roles and Responsabilities

-When students are actively engaged in productive

learning activities, they will have legitimate reasons to
behave
- If students feel respected as individuals, they will want to
reciprocrate with similar behaviour

Applying Positive Classroom Management

Jones believes that these following fundamental skills can help teachers
improve classroom discipline and academic achievement

Fundamental skills 1
Effective classroom structures consist of rules, routines, and
standards

Fundamental skills 2
Limit setting consists of a set of a physical moves
performed by the teacher that signal the student to stop
specific behaviours

Fundamental skills 3
Resposibility training teaches learners to be responsible for
their own actions

Fundamental skills 4
Positive classroom discipline includes backup systems

Advantages and Disadvantages

They apply to all age groups
Its cheap because it requires the least planning, effort, time, and
paperwork

Not all students will respond to a given discipline plan
