Name/Title:IndoorBoccer

PurposeofEvent:Thisactivityisdesignedtogivestudentsavariation
onindoorsoccer.Itcombinesaspectsofindoorsoccerandbasketball
andallowslearnersthatarenotwellpracticedineithersporttobe
successful.
Prerequisites:Studentsshouldhaveminimalknowledgeoftherulesof
soccerandbasketball.Theyshouldalsoknowtheconceptsofcatching
(trapping),passingandshootingbothasoccerballandabasketball.

MaterialsNeeded:
1.Twoportableindoorsoccergoalsortapetomakea4'5'x2'3'goalon
awallormat.
2.Twobasketballgoalsonopposingsidesofthecourt.
3.Aregularorindoorsoccerball.

DescriptionofIdea
Priortobeginningplay,teams(formaximumparticipation,34minigames
cangoonsidebyside)shouldbeorganizedequallyinregardtosizeand
athleticability.Inasmallgym(regularsizewithwallsonthesidesofthe
court)teamsof710playersisacceptable.Inlargergyms(fullsizedwith
pulloutbleachers)teamscanbedividedintogroupsof1215.Onesoccer
goalshouldbeplacedunderneatheachbasketballgoal,preferably45
feetbehindit(againstawallworkswell).
Eachteamwilloccupythesideofthecourtfacingthegoaltheyintendto
scoreon.Theteacherordesignatedrefereewillbeginplaybyplacingthe
ballatcentercourt(muchlikesoccer).Theoffensiveteam(determinedby
anyrandommeans)willstartthegamebykickingitbackwardstoa
teammate.Theteamswillthenstartplayingindoorsoccer,tryingtoscore
inthegoalsontheiropponents'side.Eachteamshoulddesignatea
goaliethatisrestrictedtothethreepointarch.Theteamswillplayindoor
socceruntiltheballiskickedintheair.

Iftheballiscaughtbeforeithitstheground,thenthecatchingteam
beginstryingtoscoreinthebasketballgoal.Aplayermaypasstheballto
ateammate,whomayalsocatchitwithhis/herhands,andproceed
towardtheirteam'sgoal.Playersarenotallowedtokicktheballupto
themselves,butmaykickorheadtheballtoateammatedirectlyoroffthe
wall/bleachers.Likebasketball,playersmayonlytaketwostepswhile
carryingtheball.Unlikebasketball,however,playersarenotallowedto
dribble.Theplayerswillshootattheirbasketuntilscoringorturningthe
ballover.Ifaplayerisfouledintheactofshootinghe/shewillgetafree
throwfromthefoulline,witheachtimeliningupoutsidethelane.Ifthe
shotismissed,liveplayresumes.Iftheopposingteamintercepts,steals
orreboundsamissedattempt,theythenswitchdirectionandgotoward
theirgoalontheoppositeend.
Whileineitherdiscipline(soccerorbasketball)teamsmayonlyscoreon
theappropriategoalforthatsport.Iftheballhitsthegroundforany
reason,thegameautomaticallyrevertsbacktoindoorsoccer.Players
mayalsodroptheballintentionallytogobacktosoccer,butmayonlydo
sooutsideofthethreepointarchtheirintendedgoalislocatedin.Ifthe
goaliereceivestheballforanyreasonhe/shemaypickitupandtravel
anywherewithinhis/herthreepointarchwithnolimitonsteps.Thegoalie
isallowedtopasstheballtoanyteammate,butcannotthroworkickitin
theairpasthalfcourt.Doingsoresultsinanautomaticturnover,withthe
opposinggoaliereceivingpossessionoftheball.
Anytypeofgoalgivesthescoringteamonepoint.Afteragoaltheballis
returnedtohalfcourt,wheretheopposingteamtakesoverpossession.A
settimelimitcanbeutilized,orteamscanplayfirsttoanysetnumberof
goals.
Variations:
Ifteamscontainbothboysandgirlstheteachercanplacearestriction
thatboysmustpasstogirlsandviceversa.Teacherscanalsorequire
thateachplayermustpasstoateammatethathe/shedidnoitreceivethe
ballfrom.

Additionalrestrictionsorpenaltyminutesmaybegiventoprotectother
players,scoreboardsand/orlighting(i.e.2minutesinapenaltyboxfor
kickingaballthathitstheceilingorforroughplay).
Forstudentswithdisabilitiesthegoalscanbewidenedoragoalmaybe
awardedforhittingthebackboard,ratherthanscoringinthehoop.
Assessment:Aftercompletiontheteachermayaskdifferentstudentsto
demonstratethedifferentpartsofeachgame(passing,catching/trapping,
shooting,etc.).Theteachermayalsotestverballyorinwrittenformwhich
aspectsofthegameofIndoorBoccerrelatetotheseparategamesof
soccerandbasketball.
