Santiago Saturday Intervention Proposal

Rationale: In order to provide necessary intervention for students failing or in

danger of failing classes, students will have the option to attend Saturday school
at Santiago High School and receive tutoring and support from content area
teachers and peer tutors.
Target Group: All students struggling in their classes can attend voluntarily.
AVID students will be assigned a Saturday school if they have a D or F in an A-G
course (math, science, history, English). Students will continue to attend Saturday
school until they are passing all of their classes with a C or better. A student can
become exempt from a Saturday school if their teacher signs the form indicating
that they are passing the class. AVID teachers will assign Saturday school
contracts based on Q pulse reports that show students that have below a 70% in
their courses.
Other content teachers can also assign students a Saturday Intervention. The list
can be sent to Kristen Harris prior to the date. Attendance will be taken and
available for all staff to see.
Logistics: During the Saturday intervention, students will be expected to work on
homework and classwork for the courses they are failing. Teachers and tutors
will be there to provide support and intervene so the student can be successful in
their core classes. Computers will be available for use as well. Content teachers
will facilitate the Saturday Intervention and peer tutors will be present to provide
additional help and support.
The goal of this program is not to punish students for poor grades, but to
intervene and provide support to students that need it. Our goal is to prepare
students for college, and that starts with success in their high school courses.
Measurable Data: There are a few forms of data that will be collected and
measured.
1. AVID student D and F rate before and after the intervention will be
collected. It is a goal for the AVID program to have 75% of students passing
all of their core classes. (For example, last year after just one Saturday
Intervention, the D and F rate dropped 20%).
2. Content area teachers that would like to participate by assigning students
to this intervention can provide evidence that the intervention brought

student achievement up. This can be evidenced through progress reports

both before and after the intervention.
3. Individual students that volunteer to attend will have their progress
tracked by the facilitator.

Dates: Saturday Intervention will run from 8 am- 12 pm (4 hours) twice

monthly.
Projected Dates:
Semester 1: October 18, November 1, November 15, December 6, December 13.
Semester 2: February 7, February 21, March 7, March 21, April 25, May 9, May
23
Total dates: 5- Semester 1

7- Semester 2

Who is Involved: Teachers that are involved include: the AVID team (Kristen
Harris, William Crawford, Katherine Kononchuk, Rogelio Padilla, Omar Mayen,

content area specialists. The teachers working each Saturday will rotate. No more
than 5 teachers will work each Saturday through this Intervention funding.
AVID peer tutors, and other student tutors seeking community service hours will
also be assisting with this intervention.
Cost: The cost for each teacher to be there is the curriculum rate $40.07 times 4
hours= $160.28
5 teachers will work each Saturday= $801.40
Semester 1 total cost= $4007
Semester 2 total cost= $5609.80
