I am not quite convinced by your interpretation of

what a portrait is. I think this would have sounded
more sophisticated if you had researched the theme
in greater depth and possibly included the thoughts
of other theorists and photographers. For examplethe face doesnt necessarily have to be in the image.
Use a photographers surname rather than their first
name when discussing them.
At best analysis focuses on technique however, you
must go into greater depth about the photographers
intentions.

Photographic portrait final piece

Your annotation is a little brief at the start and your

images could be developed even further. For
example, how could you have achieved the gritty
effect apparent in the Green images in your own
portraits?
Annotation is very brief to non-existent and does not
always articulate the intention behind the different
tasks. Each set must have an outline of the
intentions of the task, what went well, even better if
and whats next.
Interesting experiments in the darkroom and with the
physicality of the image however; these could have
been pushed much further.
Make sure you are consistent when taking
photographs. Be acutely aware of focus and
exposure. Do not include any images on your weebly
that are not meeting the expectations we have
regarding these two important features.
I really like the collection of images about your
granddad however, avoid using a flash. A longer
shutter speed and tripod would enable you to do this.
The responses to Collette also demonstrate an
excellent control of digital manipulation.
Unfortunately the missing task and lack of final
outcome has a detrimental impact on the marks
gained within this AO.
Incomplete tasks.
I like the choice of process however, I dont think this
is the right image for it. There are issues with white
balance that needed to be adjusted and the colouring
of the background is too obvious. Maybe this would
have worked better in black and white however, if
you choose to revisit this project I would suggest that
you focus on your grandads room and personal
effects again in addition to his physical portrait. It
would be interesting to see stitching in these other
images and it would move you away from your
photographer.

MARKS

LIMITED (15)

AO1: DEVELOP
Develop ideas through
sustained and focused
investigations informed by
contextual and other sources,
demonstrating analytical and
critical understanding.

Obvious and literal ideas with

little sense of direction.
Very little research into
contextual references with
weak understanding and
simplistic language.

work develops.
Little experimentation with
media with very few
exploratory studies.
Lack of personal review or
sense of moving forward.

Manipulation of formal
elements is weak and
unrefined.
Little use of recording from
sources and over-reliance on
second hand material.

AO4: PRESENT
Present a personal, informed
and meaningful response
demonstrating critical
understanding, realising
intentions and, where
appropriate, making
connections between visual,
oral or other elements.
Weak technical ability
frustrates development of
ideas and outcomes.
Little appreciation of or
response to composition,
form or structure.

BASIC (610)

COMPETE
NT (11-15)

CONFIDEN
T (16-20)

Some sense of order and

structure in the way ideas are
formed; tends to repeat
ideas.
Some understanding of
contextual research;
investigates into others
techniques but response has
superficial descriptive
language.
Appreciation of sequential
developments but short cuts
sometimes taken; original
ideas may be consolidated
too early; a tendency to
reiterate ideas.
Contextual research and
analysis goes beyond the
purely technical to begin to
consider more complex
issues; critical vocabulary
lacks breadth/depth.
Wide range of ideas explored
with exciting and imaginative
developments producing
purposeful ideas
independently with
perseverance and
enthusiasm.
Researches a diverse range
of others work to convey
ideas and meaning; critical
vocabulary used to express
emerging independent
judgments showing accuracy
and an understanding of the
more complex issues
involved.

Some exploration of media

and processes; experiments
are raw and unrefined.
Investigations abandoned too
early; a tendency to repeat
techniques; some ability to
review progress.

Experimentation with a broad

range of media with some
selection evident; a reliance
on known techniques,
sometimes predictable and
safe.
Reviews progress and
effectively refines and
develops.

Explores media and

processes in a diverse range
of experiments; understands
the limitations and potential of
materials through extending
and refining studies.
Risks sometimes taken and
used appropriately; uses a
range of communication
techniques.

Partial understanding of
visual language with
somewhat elementary
manipulation of formal
elements
Some understanding of
recording from sources
though there may be a
disproportionate reliance on
second hand material
Established visual language
and effective manipulation of
the formal elements, but
there may be some
inconsistency.
Understanding of the purpose
of research; recording from
sources is sometimes uneven
but includes meaningful
information.

Working practice shows a

sense of purpose but is
deliberate and methodical.
Some awareness of
composition, form and
structure though results may
be rough with undeveloped
technical skills.

Visual language skills evident

through assured manipulation
of the formal elements;
consistent command of
skills/technique.
Research into and recording
from sources is purposeful,
relevant and consistent.

Produces skilful outcomes

that show a consistent level
of knowledge, skill and
understanding; work has
developed a personal identity
and shows subtlety and
sensitivity.
Solutions are well
constructed; perceptive
connections made with
sources.

Work is methodical but there

is an emerging sense of own
style / individuality in
developing suitable
outcomes.
Outcomes are proficient with
sound connections made to
sources.
