He was born on 19 December 1974 in Launceston, Tasmania, and played for the
Tasmanian Tigers at the age of 19 years. Described by Australian Cricket Academy
Director, Rodney Marsh, as the best teenage batsman he had seen, Ponting was the
youngestTasmaniantoscoreafirstclasscentury.Hewentontobecamecaptainofthe
Australianonedaysidein2002,aged24,andin2004,aged28,hetookoverfromSteve
WaughasAustraliantestcaptain.

OvertheAustraliansummer2005/06AustraliaplayedSouthAfricainthetestseriesin
whichPontingplayedhisonehundredthtestmatchforAustralia,scoringahundredin
each innings. Ponting has earned his place among the very best batsmen of all time.
Batting at no. 3, he loves fast bowling and hits the ball hard. He averages 63.2 as
captainand58.2overall.

His strength as a captain was challenged during the 2007/8 tour of Australia by the
Indian test and oneday teams. Ponting, as captain, was criticised about standards of
sportsmanshipexhibitedandhevigorouslydefendedhisteam.

Thesculpture
I began the sculpture of Ponting in November 2005. Australia had just lost the Ashes
duringthenorthernsummerandhewasunderenormouspressureascaptain.

TherewereanumberofinterviewswithhimshownonthetelevisionthatsummerandI
wasabletorecordsomeofthemasreferencesforthesculpturalpiece.Iwasstruckby
howseriousandfocusedhewasthenwhentalkingaboutcricket;herarelysmiledon
oroffthefield.Ihavenoticedthat,sinceregainingtheAshes,hesmilesmuchmore.
