ACTIVITIES
Academic Events
Dramatic Interpretation
Do you have a dramatic flair? Do you understand the woes of those you come to love through translation? If so, Dramatic Interpretation is
perfect for you! Passages depending on Latin level and gender are on www.mhsjcl.com under Downloads.
Latin Oratory
Follow the footsteps of Cicero and other great Roman speakers by expatiating (or ranting) a selected passage (in Latin, of course). Violent
hand motions and extremely dramatic pauses are highly encouraged. Preparation and memorization is also encouraged, but who knows you might be destined to become a famous Roman politician and vehemently denounce a traitor to the republic! Passages depending on
Latin level are on www.mhsjcl.com under Downloads.
Open Certamen
Do you love Roman history? Mythology? Latin in general? If you replied yes to any one of those questions, Open Certamen is the event for
you! Its a great way to have fun while testing your knowledge of Latin, and you might even meet new friends from all over the state of
California. Youve probably seen those teams from your school preparing hard for competitive Certamen, but you dont have to cram all
those facts into your head to enjoy the competition. Just come over to Open Certamen and compete against other for fun. We look forward
to seeing you there!
Pre-Convention Contests
All delegates are allowed to enter modern myths, poems, and slogans before convention to be judged against other delegates in California
of the same Latin level. A modern myth must be an original myth meant to explain the existence of some phenomenon in nature or in
modern culture, an existing classical myth adapted to fit modern times, or an original myth centered around existing classical figures. Poetry
must be based on this year's JCL theme and must be in English, but are not limited to any specific meter or verse. Slogans should advertise
JCL and can be written in either English or Latin. Students can enter a maximum or ONE modern myth, ONE poem, and TWO slogans; all
th
entries are due by March 6 , 2015. All Pre-Convention Contests will be submitted online: please go to www.mhsjcl.com under
Resources and then Preconvention Contests to submit your entries.
Sight Reading
This is event is meant for anyone that has had experience reading in lingua latina - that is, everyone. From freshmen newly enlisted into the
legion, to experienced seniors who were born in the world of Caesar and Horatius (just kidding), there's a passage for every grade level,
that everyone gets an equal amount of time to prepare - five minutes. Fear not; don't be too discouraged by what seems like an impossible
task. The passage has a translation right below it, so everyone will have an equal understanding of the text; therefore, all the reader has to
do is, well, read it well! Check for rules in the White Booklet on www.mhsjcl.com under Downloads.

Arts and Crafts

Pupae pro Vestris Digitis
Are your fingers bare? Cover them with rockin' finger puppets and regale your friends with myths and tales of ancient heroes! Go simple by
making just a Hercules puppet, or go all out and decorate both hands with puppets of all the gods. When you're done, let the puppet shows
commence!

Impromptu Art
Do you enjoy an artistic challenge? Then Impromptu Art is for you. Receive a bag of random things and make something amazing that goes
along with this years theme. You must use everything that is inside of the bag, while also using some optional items placed outside of the
bag. Unleash your creative side at this interesting challenge. Join us in our goal to make it the biggest Impromptu Art in the history of JCL!
Project Runway
In the words of Madonna, Vogue, strike a pose. Unleash your inner fashion designer at Project Runway. Experience Project Runway like
never before: the timed challenge, the judges, the suspense The only thing missing is Tim Gunn. Choose your fabric and create a Roman
inspired ensemble that will wow your fellow JCLers. Create a line of clothing to be featured in the convention gallery. Entries that represent
the Project Runway Special Theme can win the votes of anyone who visits the gallery. There is an added bonus; the top three ensembles
will win special prizes! We hope that everyone comes so that we can have a huge Project Runway!
Art Gallery
Travel through a labyrinth of art! Come and see all the Pre-Convention creations of your fellow JCL members: jewelry, ceramics, paintings,
drawings, maps, et alia!

Chapter Contests
Banner
Show off your chapter's style with a banner! The theme is all important things first begin small, so show us in an artistic fashion your take on
this theme. And who knows? Your ideas may turn out to be the most grand! Exhibit your spirit for Latin and your chapter with a banner!
Check for rules in the White Booklet on www.mhsjcl.com under Downloads.
Catapult
Do you get in trouble for flinging things in class? Well we won't tell you not to. We encourage you to fling water balloons, beanbags, and
plushies with your chapter catapult! Not a trouble maker? Then apply what you learned in physics and construct your catapult for your
chapter. Come lay siege to the University High fields with an onslaught from your mighty catapult! Check for rules in the White Booklet on
www.mhsjcl.com under Downloads.
Chariot
Ever wonder what it was like to be one of the essedarii (charioteers) of ancient Rome? Or maybe you just want to horse around as a horse?
If so, you have that opportunity in our chariot races! Construct a chariot with your chapter and bring it to convention where you will compete
against other chapters chariots. It's not the Circus Maximus. But hey! All important things once began small! Check for rules in the White
Booklet on www.mhsjcl.com under Downloads.
Digital Scrapbook
Are you a Youtube sensation? Do you have a burning pride for Latin? Then create a Digital Scrapbook with your JCL chapter! Show us the
memories and events that can't be expressed in a simple picture. Show us those tech savvy talents and that movie making magic! Or
maybe you want just a humble slide show instead of a whole video? We'd love to see that too! Just be creative and don't disregard the small
things, they may be important! Check for rules in the White Booklet on www.mhsjcl.com under Downloads.
Publicity
Does your chapter put on fantastical events? Do you want to spread your love of Latin even to the stars? The publicity contests challenges
chapters to raise awareness about the Junior Classical League and all the things we value. Make signs, distribute flyers, get noticed! Not
everyone goes to state convention like JCL-ers do so you should let them know what theyre missing. Check for rules in the White Booklet
on www.mhsjcl.com under Downloads.
Scrapbook
Can you not express your joy and pride for your chapter with just words? Then share your schools proudest JCL memories by setting them
in a scrapbook! Be creative and show off your artistic flare and dedication through your scrapbook. And remember, even small memories
can be the most valuable memories! Check for rules in the White Booklet on www.mhsjcl.com under Downloads.

Ludi
At this years Ludi, participants will be able to compete against your friends and fellow JCLers in Capture the Flag, Quidditch or even Laser
Tag! These are just the some of the Ludi that will be offered. Look for featured events on www.mhsjcl.com under Updates.
Performing Arts
Dance Competition
Heres a secret. We know youve been searching for someone special out theresomeone who will truly appreciate your mad
choreography skills, someone who loves dance as much as you and is willing to watch it all day long (if all day long is three minutes or less).
Well, youve the chance to meet that person, if you just sign up for the dance competition! Sign up to showcase your choreographed dance,
be it jazz, tap, ballet, or anything else! Check for rules in the White Booklet on www.mhsjcl.com under Downloads.

Instrumental Performance
So youre a musician. Perhaps your passion is the violinor the tromboneor even the lute. Well, if you play an instrument, any instrument
at all (as long as its brass, woodwind, string, or the piano), come here to showcase your skills in a competitive environment! All you need to
bring is three copies of your music and three minutes worth of sound to showcase your chops to us folk! Check for more rules in the White
Booklet on www.mhsjcl.com under Downloads.
Thats Entertainment
That's Entertainment is an exciting opportunity to showcase your unique talents and earn the chance to perform in front of your fellow
legions. Want to show off your epic beat-boxing skills or tap into your inner court-jester with some juggling? This is the place to showcase
any one of your amazing talents! Judging will be scored based on originality, talent, and crowd support.

Workshops
Jewelry Making
Are you interested in Roman Fashion? Do you like making necklaces? Bracelets? Pretty things? Drop by jewelry making and come and
have a great time! Various beautiful beads will be provided for you to use. Diagrams of Roman jewelry can be used for reference. Come by
and make something for yourself or to give to a friend!
Mosaics
Mosaics were a big part of Ancient Roman dcor, being found on the walls and floors of houses and buildings. The Romans created
exquisite pieces of art from little pieces of tile. Now its your turn to show your skills! Come by and make mosaics out of tiles, just as the
Romans did! Recreate famous mosaics like the Cave Canem, or create your own masterpiece!
Roman Insults
Want to gossip about socialites like Cicero or burn your enemies like Catullus? Leave all that military knowledge and dactylic hexameter
behindits time to learn about the far more hilarious and useful side of the Lingua Latina. Hear the most evil curses, the sassiest jabs, and
the funniest examples of witty quips in Latin literature!
Roman Food
Have you ever been to a 5-star restaurant? No? Well come learn how to cook your own amazing and Roman-inspired dishes with the
recipes of Apicius---the king of the Roman chefs---and his De Re Coquinaria! And of course, these recipes arent just for reading. Samples
of delicious Roman cuisine will be provided!
Art of the Roman Republic
The art of the Roman Republic characterizes best the growth of Rome from a city to a world capital. By looking at a handful of iconic works
of Roman art from 500 BCE to the end of the 1st century BCE, it is possible to recognize the borrowed artistic motifs, subjects and styles
used to express Roman culture, ideology and identity. The Roman use of art, particularly for political and social gain, took shape in this early
period. There is little doubt that Roman art, with its diversity and wide ranging appeal, makes it one of the most conspicuous and numerous
bodies of art from the ancient world.
Cicero: Eloquence Personified Then and Now
It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to
America. In his first campaign for president, Barack Obama promised change; yet in formulating that promise he relied on rhetorical rules,
which for more than 2,000 years have remained unchanged. Across the ages another politician and orator, Marcus Tullius Cicero, can help
us analyze Obamas and other contemporary politicians rhetorical accomplishments. We will look at excerpts from speeches by Presidents
Obama and Clinton, and by Pericles, Cicero, and Tacitus, with an eye to their enactments of specific rhetorical rulesformulated in ancient
times and followed to this day.
