What is Culture?
THINK/ PAIR/ SHARE
With a partner, discuss and write a list of 3 things that describe what
culture is.

Definition: The sum of attitudes, customs, and beliefs that


distinguishes one group of people from another. Culture
is transmitted, through language, material objects,
ritual, institutions, and art, from one generation to the next.

What is a Tribe?
a social division of a people, defined in terms of common
descent, territory, culture

What location are you researching?


You will be randomly choosing a location from the cards
provided. You will then begin your research of that location
and choose a tribe from the area. Research their cultural
information which you will later need to design your island
projects.

the name with the word tribe and answers
these questions.
What is the name of the tribe you chose from your
region?
Where in the world is your tribe located? Be as
specific as possible.
What symbols might you find in their artifacts and
what do they represent?
What is represented on their totem or tiki statues?
What type of art was being created and what
materials were used?

Plan the layout of your page
Design and color the title for your research page
Create the background of your page

Using the information from your bubble diagram, create a page
layout that includes:
Title which is the Tribe or Culture you selected-week 1
Space for an image- week 2
Space for artwork youll create that shows a mask, symbol or
totem of that culture week 2
4 Sections of Writing: Location, Symbolism, Totems and Art
week 1 and 2
Pattern design typically seen on objects- week 1

Art Team: Use at least 3 different materials in the creation of your


page.

Homework

Complete the artwork that will go on your page. It can be of


anything from your tribe, possibly a:

Mask
Totem or Tiki
Symbol from that tribe or culture
Statue or Carving

Print and bring the image for your page and a T-Shirt that is
your House color and blank on the front.

Add your printed image to your page
Finish any designing of your page
