News from Ms.

Bishops
Kindergarten Class
Paideia Scholars are the Best!
What an awesome week
2 the scholars had! All
scholars finished their
NWEA math tests, and will
be taking their reading
tests this Wednesday! Our
testing block begins at
8:35am, so please make
sure your scholar gets a
good nights rest, eats an
awesome breakfast, and
gets to school on time!
They will rock that test!
Every day, the scholars
have been counting how
many days they have been
in school. Next Monday,
January 26th, will be the
scholars 100th day of
school! In class, we will be
celebrating this day with a
few fun crafts, some pizza
at lunch, and by taking

some time to reflect on

how much the scholars
have learned!
During this third week
of quarter three, scholars
will be learning all about
Martin Luther King, Jr.
We will kick off this learning with a discussion on
equality, respect, and fairness. As we begin to learn
and solidify these concepts
at school, you can connect
their learning at home by
having family discussions,
reading stories, and playing
games that tie in the values
that Dr. King lived for!
A week or so ago, I sent
home a few Scholastic book
catalogs with scholars. You
can also find their entire
collection and more on the

Week 3
scholastic website:
scholastic.com/readingclub.
I will be submitting the
January orders on Friday,
1/30, so please place any
orders before this day.
You can fill out the order
form and turn the form and
money into me, or you can
order books online using our
class code NKLGY. Again,
every order you make
means free books and other
materials for our classroom!
Thank you!

The Seven Habits Sharpen the Saw!

All this week, we will be reinforcing the seventh habit: Sharpen the Saw! I hope
the 4-day weekend allowed you some time to renew your mind, heart, body, and
spirit! We will be discussing some healthy ways to refresh and renew ourselves
this week in class!

Coming Up...
The scholars have almost finished reading their
first reader in language arts. With vocabulary that is
developmentally appropriate and designed to capitalize
on the phonemes that scholars already know, I am so
excited to see many of the scholars reading on their
own! We will finish up with these readers this week,
and begin using language art workbooks that will help
scholars with their handwriting and spelling!
In math, we will be beginning a new unit on numbers from 11-20. Scholars will be identifying groups
of ten, represent and write the numerals 11-20, and
begin to separate numbers into tens and ones. Our
homework has been preparing scholars for this unit,
so please keep on writing number 11-20 every night!
In social studies, we will be learning all about
Martin Luther King, Jr.! This will be a fun unit that
will have scholars discussing concepts such as equality,
fairness, and kindness!

How to Discuss Fairness With Your Child

Although I consider myself an expert in child education, I consider
you, the parent/guardian of your scholar, the expert on your child! Because of
this, I love finding articles and resources that you can use at home with your
scholar. Please take a moment to read this brief article that provides some
examples and ideas that can help you when discussing the concept of fairness.
http://www.kidsafefoundation.org/conversation-starters-for-parents-children-fairness/

Here are some main ideas from the article:

Children want and need rules, structure, and boundaries - these create
stability, fairness, and predictability for children
To younger children, fairness usually means taking turns, following rules,
sharing, listening, and telling the truth
If children think something is unfair, ask them why
Model fairness to your child at home
When creating and enforcing rules, explain to your child why the rules are in place, rather than just saying
because I said so! (ex. no running inside, so you dont trip and fall)
