Interview
Tips 101
By: Tessa Vallee

IN THIS ISSUE
First impressions matter.
Experts say we size up new
people in somewhere between
30 seconds and two minutes.
Elliott Abrams. First Impressions
really do mean everything. Overall,
this could make or break your
interview. You want to be personable
yet professional. Not sure quite how
do manage this? Here are some easy
tips to make sure you make a strong
first appearance for your soon to be
boss.

The First Steps

Before you walk into your interview,
there will most likely be someone
there to greet you, such as a
receptionist. Politely introduce
yourself and tell them why you are
here today. For example, Hi my
name is Tessa Vallee and I have an
interview scheduled with John Smith
for 2 pm today. It is important that
they know who you are.

Meeting For the First

Time
1.

2.

When they interviewer comes

out to meet you, be prepared to
stand up. It is common courtesy
to stand when meeting someone
and greet them at eye level.
Now that you are at eye level,
make sure you are making eye
contact and not staring at the
floor or off into the distance.

3.

Greet them with a smile. Smiling

will not only help you relax but it
will also show the interviewer
that you are calm and
personable.

4.

Offer a handshake, even if the

interviewer does not offer one
first. Its proper etiquette to
include this while saying your
name. After introducing
yourself, say something like, it
is a pleasure to meet you or
how are you today?

5.

Finally, make sure to seat

yourself after the interviewer
does. You dont want to seem
too comfortable.

Hello, my
name is Jane
Smith, its a
pleasure to
meet you

What Do I Say?

THERES NO RIGHT ANSWER

Every now and then, an interviewer might ask a strange question
that you think has nothing to do with the job. This is because
they are testing how quickly you think on your feet. Dont let
these questions scare you. Take a moment and respond to the
best of your ability.

ILLEGAL QUESTIONS
You should think carefully about every question but you should
also remember that there are some questions that you dont
need to answer. An interviewer should never ask you about your
ethnicity, your age, marital status or other personal questions
like that. If they do ask these questions politely say something
like, There is nothing in my personal life that will interfere with
this position, thank you. By doing this, hopefully they will move
on with the interview.

HELP

You can only prepare for an interview so much. In reality, you will never know what kind of questions the interviewer
will throw at you. Thats why you have to remain calm and prep yourself for any possible awkward or unsure
moments. They want to see how you react on the spot. Here are some helpful tips.

WHY SHOULD WE HIRE YOU?

Here is your chance to brag a little. But you want to highlight all of your strengths without bragging too much of
sounding over confident. State why you believe you are most qualified for the position they are offering. After telling
the interviewer about all of your amazing qualities, be sure to justify them with information or reasoning .

When dressing for an interview, you

want to dress a step above the
position you are applying for. You
want to look like you are taking the
interview seriously.
Women:
It is best for women to wear either a
pants or dress suit when going to an
interview. However, if wearing a
skirt or dress you want to make sure
it is an appropriate length (knee
length). You also want to make sure
that you are not showing too much
skin. Wear a cardigan or blazer to
cover your shoulder and have an
appropriate neck line. Try not to
wear too much perfume, jewelry or
too high of heels and try avoiding
anything open-toed. Finally, make
sure your hair is pulled back neatly
out of your face. You want to carry
yourself with confidence!

Dress to Impress

by Alison Doyle http://jobsearch.about.com/od/interviewattire/a/interviewdress.htm

Men:
When dressing for an interview, it is
always appropriate to wear a suit
and tie. You want to make sure that
your suit matches and that your
shirt and tie are not too vibrant or
distracting. Also you want to have
dress shoes. Avoid any tennis shoes
or sandals as well. Try and comb
your hair a neatly as possible and
shave your face cleanly. Also make
sure your finger nails are trimmed
and clean to give a nice handshake.
Just like the ladies, try not to wear
too much cologne or aftershave, and
cover up any tattoos.

14 Easy Steps

Step 6: Converse with the

interviewer. Think of it more as a
conversation than an interview but
dont make your language too
relaxed.
Step 7: Positivity is key. Don think
to yourself that youre going to mess
up or not get the job. You have to
feel confident in order for them to
think you are as well.

Have the interview jitters

and not sure how to calm
yourself? Here are a few
tips to make sure you go
into your interview feeling
calm, cool and collected!
Step 1: Be prepared. Do your
research on the organization to
make sure you know what youre
getting yourself into. Know their
products, what they do, and their
competitors. Also brush up on
yourself and your past work. The
more you know, the better you feel.
Step 2: Plan. Make sure you have
everything planned and put together
ahead of time. Print out your resume
a few days before and keep it in a
folder with any other paperwork.
Also lay out your clothes so you
have them the morning of.
Step 3: Rehearse. Practice your
introduction and some responses. Be
careful not to over rehearse.
Step 4: Eliminate any possible
stress. Dont do anything that could
cause you to be nervous before
hand. Go to bed early and eat
breakfast in the morning. Also leave
earlier than usual in case of traffic or
construction.
Step 5: Arrive early. By doing this it
can give you time to familiarize
yourself with the location. Being able

Step 8: Think of the interviewer as

more of a friend rather than a
rejection machine.
Step 9: Posture is key. Sit up
straight and dont fidget in your
chair. You dont want to show them
you are uncomfortable. Sitting up
straight shows you are ready and
respectful.
Step 10: Don think about the
nervousness. Many people stress
because they feel like they have to
be stressed because it is normal.
Step 11: Focus on your strengths.
Dont highlight the negatives about
yourself, instead show them why
you are suit for the job.
Step 12: Deep breaths. You dont
want to start hyperventilating or
cause yourself to pass out. That
would not make a good impression.
Take a few deep breaths and take
your time when speaking.
Step 13: Accept the fact that
mistake will happen. If you happen
to mess up, dont dwell on it.
Instead, move on with the interview
and keep the positivity going.
Step 14: Remember that there are
other jobs out there. If you happen
to not get the job, dont think that
that was your only chance. There are
thousands of jobs and sometimes
you have to go through many
rejections in order to find the career
that is meant for you.

Office 2010 introduced several new
and improved picture formatting
tools in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
Among those is the Remove
Background tool that you can use to
remove backgrounds from your own
images, similar to the sample image
on the preceding page.
To do this in Word, first insert your
image into the document (on the
Insert tab, click Picture), and then
select it. Then, on the Picture Tools
Format tab, in the Adjust group,
click Remove Background.
The Remove Background feature

automatically displays what it

believes to be the central subject of
the image. However, its easy to
adjust this if the immediate result is
not what you need.
On the Background Removal tab,
click Mark Areas to Keep or Mark
Areas to Remove and then drag
your mouse pointer in a line across
the portion of the image you want to
add or remove. When you are
finished making adjustments, click
