Portfolio Reflection
Portfolio Reflection
Looking back throughout this semester, there are many positives and
negatives in my writing. With seven different essays in the portfolio you will
find evident improvement from the beginning of the year to now but there
are many negatives that still need to be corrected. I am still a long way from
achieving my perfect essay but as each essay is handed back graded I find
myself learning more and more about my writing style and how I can better
my writing in preparation for the next level.
One of the strongest points in my writing is selecting my audience.
When given a topic I am able to relate it to readers who would be interested
in reading on that topic. As found in my Division Essay, Number One Fan, it
is directed toward those who have been around athletic events but can also
be understood by those who have not. Strong selection of audience is also
eminent in the Research Essay, Tobacco Regulation, where I allocate
statistical information and facts that will force readers to re-evaluate their
decisions. Since my intended audience was smokers themselves, this will
cause smokers to consider whether or not smoking is worth it.
A second strong point in my writing throughout this semester is writing
with a purpose. I believe my ability to allocate all of my ideas to achieve one

goal gives all of my pieces a strong sense of purpose to achieve those goals
whether it be to inform, persuade or compare. This is strongly exemplified in
my High School Students paper where my purpose is to inform parents and
the older generation the different styles of high school students one would
encounter if they were to walk the halls of a present day high school. My
strongest use of purpose this year was in the Literary Analysis of Filling
Station. I accomplished the main goal of informing the reader about the
poem and used strong enough detail and description of literary devices to
give the reader further information about the poem.
It is evident looking through my essays this semester that my weakest
aspect of writing is the mechanical conventions of my sentences. I tend to
have many run-on and fragmented sentences that take away from the
meaning intended and ultimately causes my grade to suffer. As you can see
in my Personal Narrative, An Eye Opener, for Life, the numerous amounts
of fragments and run-ons devastates my writing. It appears that in each
essay from then I have slowly improved on reducing the amount of run-ons
and fragments but there are still better efforts needed to be made.
