Biography of Suleiman I

Known as the Magnificent in the West, Kanuni, which is the Lawgiver in the East,
Suleiman I was born on 27th April 1495 in Trabzon. His father name was Sultan Selim I and his
mother name was Hafsa Sultan. He was a tall man with a round face and all of these physical
features make him handsome at that time. His father, Sultan Selim I, gave him a really intense
education. Sultan Selim I put his son to learn with his grandmother, Gulbahar Hatun. After a
period of time until Suleiman I reached the age of seven, he received an education from famous
scholar Karakizoglu Hayreddin Hizir Efendi in Istanbul. From all of these educations, he went
back to his father at the age of fifteen.
Because of Suleiman Is eagerness, he wanted to be a governor. Therefore, he was sent to
Sarki, Karahisar, Bolu, and Kefe province. Gathering experiences of being a governor, Suleiman
I was able to be independent. Thereby, after his father died, Selim I, he succeeded him without
any rejection or objection. Suleiman I was the tenth and the longest-reigning Sultan of the
Ottoman Empire, which starts from 1520 till his death 1566. Due to his capability of being the
next ruler, he was a very serious and confident man that he never broke his promises or
commands. Suleiman I was a really courteous ruler and unbiased. He got his reputation as the
fair ruler from his actions, such as there was a case in Egypt that the citizens were overcharged.
Therefore, Suleiman I immediately changed the governor.
During Suleiman Is reign, the Ottoman Empire entered the golden age of cultural
development. Because of the Community of the Talented, many apprenticeships, artists, and
craftsmen were able to make some fair wages. In his age, he was famous for his poems in Islam
too. Moreover, he supported and sponsored many artists, religious thinkers, and philosophers to
be in the most educated courts in Europe. He was renowned for his poems and his famous verse
was, The people think of wealth and power as the greatest fate, But in this world a spell of
health is the best state. What men call sovereignty is a world strife and constant war; Worship of
God is the highest throne, the happiest of all estates. Furthermore from what he was famous
for, Suleiman I had a legacy. At the time of his reign, the Ottoman Empire was the worlds most
powerful. Suleiman I was able to take control of Muslim cities, such as Mecca, Medina,
Jerusalem, Damascus, Cairo, and Baghdad.
While Suleiman I was doing his duty as a ruler, he died. When he was commanding the
siege of Sziget, he died. Suleiman I died in the age of 71 on 7th September 1566. Even though, he
have died for a long time. Many people do admired and remembered him. Like William
Shakespeare, he quoted him as a military prodigy in The Merchant of Venice.
