Part 1: Assessment Technology

I used Questbase.com to make my assessment and the link to my online assessment is the
following: http://my.questbase.com/take.aspx?pin=9061-7778-4843. The quiz is very easy to find
if one follows the link I provided and taking the quiz is very easy to do once you are there. The
quiz contains True/False questions, fill in the blank and a multiple choice question as well. My
intention for this quiz is that it would be used as a formative assessment. The questions provided
would be the result of a day or two of instruction to see if the students are comprehending the
lesson plan. If I see that my students are failing the quiz, then it would be a good indication that
my teaching strategy might need to be changed. I would determine that my teaching can be
improved before I blame the students for not being able to understand the class. The answer key
for the quiz is the following: 1. True; 2. True; 3. Balance Sheet; 4. Equity;
5. Resources the business has and what it owes.
Introduction
Technology has revolutionized our educational system and this also includes on how
teachers use assessments to determine their students learning progress. Shiau Wei Chan and
Zaleha Ismail commented in their article titled A Technology-Based Statistical Reasoning
Assessment Tool In Descriptive Statistics For Secondary School Students that the focus of
assessments has gradually shifted from traditional assessments to alternative assessments.
Helping students grow academically is measured by how well they learn the lesson at hand and
technology has helped both students and teachers make the best of the learning process. Todays
availability to access software on line that can be used as tools to measure students ability to
learn can also be used by educators to determine if their teaching styles or strategies are

productive or not. This essay describes how utilizing software to support assessment is very
effective.
Technology to Facilitate Ongoing Efforts to Assess Student Learning
It makes sense to say that every teacher wants to know that their students are properly
learning the lesson given to them. Just as technology has helped improve life in general, it has
revolutionized how educators assess students learning in the classroom. The advantage to using
software to assess students is that it is basically very easy to use. One would only need to have
the basic computer skills to use the software options available. The teacher can use these
assessments during the lesson plan to measure learning during the lesson plan or the teacher can
use the assessments at the end of the lesson plan to evaluate if the student learned the lesson.
Another important factor on the use of technology in the form of software to evaluate learning is
that it also informs the teacher of how their teaching style or strategy is working. A teacher will
be able to tell if he or she might need to make changes to their curriculum. The following are just
a few examples of incorporating technology to facilitate assessments.
(Polleverywhere) One software that teachers can use to assess student learning would be
polleverywhere.com. Smart phones are very common today and students use them just about
everywhere they go. Some teachers might want to apply this very common practice to good use
and employing it as a form to assess students. Teachers make a question on the polleverywhere
application and students can answer them using their cell phones. The responses can be seen live
on the web or they can also be seen through the use of a PowerPoint presentation. Teachers can
use these results as part of their classroom instruction and review the results with the entire class.
(Polldaddy) Another software that can be used in classroom assessment is
polldaddy.com. Here a teacher can go to make polls, surveys, get content rated and of course,

quizzes. The purpose for knowledge assessment can be achieved through the use of this online
software. Students are able to link from anywhere they can access the site and take the quiz on
line. Polldaddy allows the teacher to customize the look of the quiz and they are able to use the
Easy-To-Use-Editor option to create the quiz they desire. They are also able to upload images,
videos as well as other media, collect email addresses along with names and keep track of
student participation. After having the results, a teacher might review the results with the class.
(Questbase) Questbase.com is an easy access, easy to use software that makes
assessment fun and interesting to use. Students have the ability to access the site from anywhere
they are able to be on line and taking quizzes are very easy to complete. This particular software
does not require a password to log in, but it does give the teacher the option to need a log in
password if the teacher prefers. The on line assessment helps the teacher measure the learning
progress of the student. The teacher will also be able to accurately measure the effectiveness of
his or her teaching styles and strategies given during class time.
(Formative and Summative Assessments)
The way assessments are being presented in the classroom today is very different to how
they were presented at least ten years ago. Spencer J. Seland mentions in his article called
Technology-Based Classroom Assessments that technology is very helpful in formative and
summative assessments. He basically explains that formative assessments monitor learning
progress and provide feedback to improve instructional programs. Summative assessment is
explained in very simple words by Dilitz Perera, co-author of Formative and Summative
Assessment in On Line Education, as being a measure of an end product. Both forms of
assessments can be applied by using the three examples of technologies available for teachers to
use in their classroom lecture. Teachers can build quizzes using these on line tools during the

lesson plan or at the end of the lesson plan. Either form of assessment type can be used to offer a
better quality education to their students.
(Pros and Cons of using Technology to Facilitate Assessment)
Like any task or assignment given to students in a classroom, a teacher must first make
sure that it is the student who benefits from the experience. Technology is very much present in
the classroom today that it is now becoming an essential part of the teaching strategies that
educators are now practicing. Can the use of technology to facilitate assessment become
something that will hinder the learning experience for students? Can the use of technology alter
classroom instruction? The article Technology-Based Classroom Assessments gives an excellent
point on whether technology will be productive or not productive. The teacher would need to
research the following when using technology, facilitate the teaching, learning, and
assessment processes without altering the classroom based instruction, tasks, and skills that are
being taught and assessed. This is an excellent point and it promotes how teachers should
consider the pros and cons before using any form of technology for assessment. In an honest
opinion, the use of technology to facilitate assessment is very effective. The one con for using
said technology would probably be that the student, or even the teacher, might not know how to
use the technology that is being used for the assessment. Although, this could be resolved very
easily by taking the time to teach or learn the skills necessary for the task.
(Should a teacher only use technology to assess student learning? Why or why not?)
Assessing student learning will always be necessary to measure the progress that
students are making. There was a time when technology was very limited and teachers had
strategies, whether good or bad, to give them an understanding of how their students were doing.
Even though technology is now a big part of the classroom setting, it should not be the only

method to assess student learning. It is not technology that is making an impact in students; it has
always been and will always be the teacher who impacts the lives of their students. Teachers can
definitely use technology to enhance their assessments, but the teacher should never stop being
innovative and original when it comes to their own teaching styles. There is nothing wrong with
not using technology to assess student learning, but it would not hurt to use it either.
What is the importance of assessment technology in connection with the ISTE standards?
The ISTE standards are there to maintain a high quality level of education. One of the
reasons for using technology for assessing students is to prepare them for a competitive world
which demands knowledge of technological skills to be successful. The learning environment
should be student centered and provide the opportunity for every student to improve their
learning abilities through the use of assessment technology. All these methods of assessment
technology should be part of a foundation that inspires students to become knowledgeable in the
use of modern day technology, and using assessment technology can give students the
opportunity to use their thinking skills and practice using technology.
Concluding Paragraph for Software to Support Assessment

There is no escaping the use of technology in todays world because we have entered the
age of technology. Technology usage is growing ever more each day and every part of classroom
instruction will be influenced at one point or another. Teachers will always be the center and
focal point of providing an exceptional learning experience for their students, and the use of
technology, including online software to support assessment, is essential in todays schools.
Todays students use technology in their everyday life and using software will more than likely
be very simple for them because technology is common in todays world. It is safe to say that

teachers want their teaching strategy to be effective for their students to grow academically and
using software to support assessment can be an effective method in reaching this goal. Whether it
is formative or summative assessment, the use of software to assess students will more than
likely be a positive experience for students as well as teachers.
