Semester:
Spring 2015
Objectives:
To
instill
and
foster
an
appreciation
and
understanding
of
the
art
of
photography
and
photographic
storytelling.
To
introduce
and
define
numerous
topics
related
to
photographic
art.
To
inspire
students
to
use
photography
as
a
means
of
self-expression
and
as
a
vessel
for
telling
their
personal
stories.
To
encourage
each
student
to
build
a
portfolio
of
photographic
work
showcasing
their
growing
knowledge
of
the
art.
Topics:
This
course
will
be
laid
out
on
a
weekly
basis:
during
each
week
we
will
cover
a
specific
aspect
of
photography
(technical,
artistic,
or
both)
in-depth,
with
each
class
period
designated
to
a
component
of
the
weekly
topic.
Assignments:
Each
week
there
will
be
a
photographic
assignment
based
on
that
weeks
topic.
These
assignments
will
be
due
every
Monday.
The
assignments
will
all
be
the
same:
submitvia
Google
foldersAT
LEAST
3
photographs
(that
you
took)
that
demonstrate
an
understanding
of
the
topic
covered
in
class
the
previous
week.
These
assignments
should
also
build
on
one-another,
so
that
each
new
assignment
will
incorporate
not
only
the
new
topic
learned
that
week,
but
all
of
the
previous
topics
as
well.
Grading:
Grades
will
be
determined
using
a
point-based
scale.
There
will
be
a
total
of
700
points
possible
during
the
semester,
broken
down
as
such
(all
of
the
following
information
is
subject
to
change):
Materials:
Camera:
Although
I
cannot
require
students
to
have
a
camera
for
this
course,
I
STRONGLY
RECOMMEND
you
have
one.
If
you
must,
you
may
take
your
photographs
using
your
cell
phone
or
laptop,
but
a
true
photographic
camera
will
be
enormously
helpful.
If
you
do
not
own
one
already,
I
am
glad
to
make
recommendations
depending
on
your
price
range.
Books:
There
will
be
required
reading
for
this
class.
All
reading
will
come
from
the
book
Camera
Lucida
by
Roland
Barthes.
This
book
will
be
distributed
within
the
first
few
weeks
of
the
semester.
Once
it
has
been
distributed,
students
will
be
expected
to
bring
it
to
class
every
day.
Late
Work:
Getting
it
done
late
is
better
than
not
getting
it
done
at
all.
For
each
day
late
that
a
photography
assignment
is
turned
in,
the
highest
grade
possible
will
be
lowered
by
2
points.
For
example:
if
the
project
is
submitted
on
Tuesday,
the
highest
grade
possible
will
be
8/10;
Wednesday
will
be
6/10;
etc.
THE
ONE
AND
ONLY
RULE
FOR
DISICPLINE:
Respect.
For
your
peers,
your
teacher,
facilities,
property,
and
yourself.
Give
it
and
you
will
receive
it.
Simple
as
that.
