-Hinduism is the main religion in India and Nepal and commonly found
throughout South Asia.
-Hindus believe that living a dharmic (ethically good and balanced) life is
important. (Varna/Dharma/Karma)
-Hindus believe that the soul to merge with god is the main goal in life
(obtaining Moksha)
-Hindus believe in Reincarnation and becoming like Brahman
Symbols
This symbol, the Om, should be somewhat
familiar considering it is a representation
of the Hinduism Religion.
This symbol is composed of three sounds.
-Three worlds: Earth,atmosphere, heaven.
-Three Gods: Brahma, Vishnu, Siva.
-Three Vedic scripture: Rj, Sama, Yajur
Symbols
One of the most common symbols we think of when we hear Hinduism is
the dot on the womans forehead called a bindi. There are other types of
marks that men and women wear but the bindi has more specific meaning and
less religious connections. The bindi is simply worn by married women.
Symbols
In Hinduism, the lotus flower represents non-attachment and beauty. It
gets this meaning because it is rooted in the mud but floats on top of the water
without getting wet. This symbolizes how one should live in the world but not
get attached to its surroundings to bring it down.
Interesting Facts
-When Hindus greet each other, they often say Namaste or Namaskar as a
sign of respect and friendship
-Before the start of any religious ceremony or gathering, Hindus worship Lord
Ganesha and chant mantra
-They commonly pierce their babies ears as well as the women and girls
pierce their noses
- A married woman wears a Mangalsutra around her neck, bangles around her
wrists and toe rings which indicate that she is married.
-Generally women and girls wear clothing that covers most of the body
except their face
