After a couple weeks of background regarding values, cost, the strategy of businesses, customer satisfaction, and etc. I would instruct them to go on the coolmath4 kids and coolmathgames/lemonade and explain to them what we will be doing. On there, they will learn about the process and details that go into the lemonade selling business. After they analyze more things on these websites, they will create an excel sheet to record decisions they made for their business, costs, materials, and etc! What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom? Computers, and within the computers, the excel program and internet would be needed for www.coolmath-games.com/lemonade/ and coolmath4kids.com Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level.): a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their school: This is a group project of 2-3 students so there will be a lot of student collaboration and teamwork. The different groups can collaborate with each other if they need help. Furthermore, since business is an everyday essential part of our world, they can always talk about this topic with adults (such as parents) outside the classroom as mentors regarding this subject. b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (collecting original data and or producing original products as a result of engaging in the project): the students will be pretend purchasing materials from the site and recording the data. They will then be able to create their own lemonade business! c. Higher-order thinking: This project actually helps students think big picture and allows them to understand how much work is put into an efficient business these days! 1
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care
about their product: The students will be able to share the work with each other with group presentations and be able to post it to the coolmath4kids for other students to be able to compare their work. Guidance for Portfolio Entry:
Online projects are projects that are focused on technology and completed from a site. This means a lesson can be taught in the classroom, but the student will be working online to fully understand it. Online collaboration sites are used to allow the student to expand upon the online project. He or she can use these sites to learn more information about the topic, or use it to actually complete the project. Student publishing opportunities allow students to view other peoples work and compare it to their own. These resources can help students collaborate with each other and they can help each other learn the material in a substantial manner. It allows them to think on a higher level because technology challenges people to go out of their comfort zone to learn information and eventually create new material. An online project site that I learned a lot from was: http://www.everestquest.com/. It made me realize that technology can literally help students learn with any subject. This website involves following the trek of a famous explorer and teaches you a lot about nature. It made me excited to realize the potential my students can reach with resources like these. Some valid concerns that parents may have is that their students or children spend too much time on the internet and computer and that they want to use school as a time for them to focus on real world models and not on 2
computers. Authority figures may want more hands-on activities as well.
However, I think the end results will allow both of these parties to understand how much more their students can thrive when technology is involved, and how much a higher degree of learning is involved. Technology does indeed expand horizons dramatically and offers more options for students. When viewers look at my lesson idea template, they will be able to see what subjects it generally covers (economics and math) and how technology can be a huge part of understanding these two topics together.
