Robotics Engineering with LabView

1. Engineering Design
Central Concepts: Engineering design involves practical problem
solving, research, development, and invention/innovation, and requires
designing, drawing, building, testing, and redesigning. Students should
demonstrate the ability to use the engineering design process to solve a
problem or meet a challenge.

Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

1.1 Identify and explain the steps of the engineering design process: identify the
problem, research the problem, develop possible solutions, select the best possible
solution(s), construct prototypes and/or models, test and evaluate, communicate the
solutions, and redesign.

Step 1
Identify the
problem

Write down the original problem here.

Student - Design, build and program a
robot to: knock or push other robots
off of a wooden platform. this project is
called Sumo Bots or Battle Bots.

Step 2
Research the
problem

Explore other options via the internet

Student: List the internet sites that were
helpful.

Site 2. mrcrokesrobotics.weebly.com
Site 3 _____________________

What did you learn from your research?

A. adding a plow or lifting mechanism to
your robot is an advantage
B. a heavy robot with more torque is
recommended

Step 3
Develop solutions
BRAINSTORM
COLLABORATION

Student : Share your ideas with your design team. List your ideas below.
1.a small robot with a lot of torque so its quick and powerful
2.a robot with a lifting mechanism so it can flip over the
opponent
3. a large, heavy robot with a lot of torque so it has power
and no other robot can move or push it

Step 4
Select the best
Possible solution(s)

Design idea #1
Pro:
I made a small robot with a lot of torque so it has power to push
other robots and its quick and agile.
Con:
It is very light so other larger robots can probably push it with
ease.

Step 5
Construct a prototype

Student: Build a robot with your nxt lego kit

Use the next slide(s) for your digital pictures of your prototypes.
If the robot fails the design must be modified and retested.

Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Step 6 Test and evaluate

If the robot fails the design must be modified and retested.

No
Modify the robot

Redesign

If you could do this over again what would you do

differently?
I would make a larger, heavier robot with a lot of torque and a
plow attached to the front so it could flip other robots off of
the battlefield.
What did you learn?
I learned that the more smaller gears attached to larger gears
means more overall torque. I also learned that speed is a
valuable asset in this project as well as torque and power.
