Coursework Problem 3: Vibration Serviceability Design

The Oasys GSA file which accompanies this coursework problem contains geometry and finite
element modal analysis results of a prestressed concrete slab. Modal properties were calculated using
unity-scaled modeshapes. Using this information and following recommendations of Appendix G of
the Concrete Society Technical Report 43 perform the following:

(1) Using finite element modal analysis results calculate by hand the highest response factor for a
single person walking excitation applied at point j (x=4.5 m; y=2 m) and response calculated at
point i (x=6.0 m; y=3 m) assuming that the highest pacing rate is 2.2Hz. Assume conservatively
that scaling factor in equation (G8) is r=1. Write down all calculation steps and interim results.
Assume 2% modal damping ratio for all relevant modes of vibration.

(2) Using NDOF, check this hand calculation and show the corresponding screen shot.

(3) Using NDOF, plot an envelope of maximum responses for pacing rates form 1 to 2.2 Hz. Interpret
the reasons for peaks in the envelope of maximum responses. Using these results, assess if the
floor, based on this consideration only, would be suitable for a workshop.

(4) To verify modal analysis results obtained via finite element analysis, calculate by hand relevant
modal properties of this floor required to perform its vibration serviceability check assuming that
it is a system with distributed properties having geometry and boundary conditions corresponding
to the finite element model given in the GSA file. Compare these modal analysis results with the
results of finite element modal analysis and comment on their difference.
