Authentic Assessments

In this unit, I used two authentic assessments, both using rubrics. The first authentic
assessment was the Me on the Map packet, in which the students first read the book Me on
the Map and participated in a teacher lead discussion. Then they went back to their seats and
completed the packet. I created the rubric based off of the following points:

Completion of the entire packet

All the details of the maps were completed
They showed a basic understanding of the state in regards to the country and
continent
The writing prompt was completed with 5 or more sentences
The Me on the Map information page was completed filled out.

Writing Prompt

Me on the Map

Point total= ____/20

In total, the students did not do as well as I had anticipated. In fourth grade, time
management is something that we strive to work on with the students. Each student is given a
variety of minor assignments that they must complete in their spare time by Friday, or they are
given the remainder of the work to do for homework over the weekend. I had assigned this
activity to be done throughout the week, even allowing them a few extra days to complete the
assignment, but many of the students either didnt complete it in entirety or lost the packet
completely. I scored the ones handed to me, giving the rest of the students a zero for
incomplete work.
