introduction

 Around the earth is a layer of air called the
atmosphere.
 Air is made up of many gases, a very small
percentage of dust particles and water
vapour.
 Of significance to the study of weather is the
troposphere.
 In this zone, temperature decreases with
increasing height and most of the water
vapour is present.

ELEMENTS OF WEATHER & CLIMATE

What do you understand by weather and climate?

 Weather is a short term change.  It involves the

changes that take place in the lower part of the
earth’s atmosphere in a localized area during a
short period of time.

 Climate is a long term pattern.  It involves certain

patterns of weather which occur over a long
period of time in a particular region; generally
30-40 years.

What’s The Difference Between
Weather And Climate?
 To define and describe weather, we use terms such as:
windy/rainy/calm, sunny/cloudy, hot/warm/cold &
humid.
 For example: We might describe today’s weather as being
sunny, a little humid, but no so bad because its also
slightly windy, cooling the “felt” temperature down a bit.

 To define and describe climate,we mix and match any

combination of the following terms: hot/warm/cool/cold
& dry/seasonally wet/wet.
 For example: We might describe the climate of Indonesia
as hot and seasonally wet, while we would probably
describe the desert of the Sahara as hot and dry.
