Increasing Financial Aid

Whereas: It is the role of Marquette University Student Government, to identify, understand,

and actively address and represent students’ needs, concerns and interests; and,

Whereas: The cost of tuition for undergraduate students has increased for the 2007-2008
academic school year by $1,600 or 6.5 percent, raising the cost from $24,670 to
$26,2701; and,

Whereas: The average room and board costs will go up $760 for the year, from $8,120 to
$8,880, an increase of about 9.3 percent1; and,

Whereas: The yearly Student Health Fee paid by full-time undergraduate students will
increase by $4, from $268 to $2721; and,

Whereas: “The Office of Student Financial Aid at Marquette University attempts to help
students bridge the gap between the costs of attending the university and the
ability of students and their families to meet those costs”2; and,

Whereas: Students have the right to expect that the Office of Student Financial Aid at
Marquette University will assist with obtaining financial assistance and
information.3

Therefore: Let it be recommended that Marquette University increase the amount of financial
aid allocated to students in order to help students compensate the increase in
tuition, room and board, and student health fee.

Furthermore: Let it also be recommended that Marquette University continue to work hard to
raise funds for financial aid and make these issues a high priority when
considering tuition increases.
