This short story reminded me a lot of No Country for Old Men.

Both have to do with a baffling and terrifying kind of evil that is new to
the world. In No Country for Old Men, the old-timer sheriff witnesses
this in a serial killer and has no idea what to make of it: The crime you
see now, its hard to even take its measure. This same comparison
between the fondly remembered past and the disconcerting present is
also seen in OConnors A Good Man is Hard to Find. In the beginning
of the story, we listen to the grandmother reminisce of the older,
better times. At the diner, she agrees with Red Sams opinion that, A
good man is hard to find. Everything is getting terrible. When she
faces the Misfit later in the story, she cant make sense of his
degenerate, bewildering character. When asked about his parents and
his upbringing, he says, God never made a finer woman than my
mother and my daddys heart was pure gold. When asked why he
doesnt pray to Jesus to help him with his troubles, he replies, I dont
want no hep. Im doing all right by myself. The Misfit is an entirely
foreign character to the grandmother, even despite him being her own
son; he is incomprehensibly evil.
