A. The Lesson
1. Introduction (3 minutes)
Getting attention
How many of you have heard of Yoshi before?

Relating to past experience and/or knowledge

Like Yoshi you may have had to run from a friend or sibling in a game before like tag.

Creating a need to know

We are going to practice that today so you are better the next time someone tries to catch you.

Sharing objective, in general terms

In the activities today we are going to work on evading and working as a team.

2. Content Delivery (38 minutes)

I. Warm-Up (4 minutes)
1. Students will get in lines on half of the gym. There are 5 squad leaders that the other students are in line behind them.
2. Squad leaders will get to pick from various stretches/warm-ups the class then performs together. They already know the list
to choose from.
3. Students line up on the sides of the basketball court and can choose from various dynamic stretches to do on their own as
they go back and forth between the sidelines. They know the list and it is on the marker board as well.
II. Activities (34 minutes)
1. Yoshi (20 minutes)
a. Students will sit in a circle at half court for instruction
b. Students are divided into two teams, one wearing pinnies the other not
c. Each team has a castle half court is the divider between the two castles
d. The goal is to get your whole team onto Yoshis Cloud (mats) on the other teams castle by evading them.
e. If you cross the divider to get to the cloud and are tagged you then sit down.
f. To get back in a teammate must come grab your hand and take you back to your castle. If your teammate came
from the cloud you cannot go to the cloud, you both must go back to your castle first.
g. To win a round you need work together as a team to protect your castle and get everyone on your cloud.
h. First team with all members sitting on their cloud wins the round.
i. If you hear YOSHI yelled everyone is healed and needs to run to their cloud and sit down. No tagging during a
YOSHI.
2. Rainbow Road (14 minutes)
a. Students are divided into four teams (one on either free throw line one on either side of court at half court line)
and will get in line.
b. Poly spots will be place on the court randomly
c. I will then explain to them (do an example) of the game. I will give them a color pattern, for example: blue,
yellow, red, each student must tap a blue, yellow, and red dot with their foot, in that order, before going back to their
line.
d. One student goes at a time, similar to a relay. The first person will go and then the second and so on until each
student on the team has gone.
e. The first team with everyone back and sitting wins the round.
f. To challenge the students I may have them jump or hop 3 times to activate the button.
3. Skunk Tag (left over time if the other activities did not take as long as planned)
a. Will be used if the other two games do not take as long as planned.
b. 5 hula hoops will be placed on the court (1 in the middle, the other 4 in the corners)
c. 2 students start out as the skunks or are it
d. They must start out in the middle hula hoop or the skunks home
e. When the game starts they chase the other students. When they tag another student the other student then becomes
a skunk and the skunk becomes another player.
d. The new skunk must go to the skunk home and yell NEW SKUNK! before tagging anyone.
e. The other four hula hoops are safe zones where students cannot be tagged. Students can only use the safe zone for
10 seconds. Only one student in a safe zone at a time.
3. Closure (4 minutes)
1. Students will sit in a circle at half court for discussion.
2. Questions
a. What did you enjoy about the evasion/Yoshi?
b. What is the difference in chasing and evading?

Assessments Used: Observation, question and answer

Post Lesson Reflection 11/25/2014:

The stretches and dynamic time went well. The students have that part of class down well and do a good job of going through the
stretches and dynamics. When giving the directions for Yoshi, I could have shortened the initial time for giving directions because
students started to lose interest. With giving fewer directions before the game, I could have elaborated during stoppage time during the
game because there were opportunities for that. This probably would have been more effective for this lesson. I could have
transitioned from Yoshi to Rainbow Road more efficiently. I could have done it by color of shirt or other clothing so there wasnt a
long line at the water fountain. This would have cut down on some of the horse play at the water fountain as well. During Rainbow
Road I could have added an exercise when they got back in their line to decrease their inactive time during the game. Following the
closure, I could have had the students skip, hop, jump, or another traveling skill to get in line. This would have not only allowed them
to get more practice with the skill but probably would have decreased the amount of racing, sliding, and pushing to get in line to leave.
I need to also make sure I am giving positive feedback more often. I dont think I was negative but I could have been more positive. I
thought I did a good job of making sure all of the students heard and understood what I was saying. I also thought they were
physically active for a good percentage of the class. Overall, I though the lesson went well. I have aspects to work on and some of the
management problems will be easier when I have more time to get to know the students and build a relationship with them.
