The notion of sport (in the singular) poses before us the following
problem: what kind of recognition (or lack thereof) do regional sports
movements receive in the predominant world system of sports? In order

achievements must be carefully examined.

The attention currently placed on the doping practices of elite sportsmen effectively conceals the fact that millions of people at home, at school
and at work take multitudes of drugs that raise their overall levels of tone
and physical activity. For many of these people the main objective is to
achieve a high level of productivity, and this objective has already replaced
the traditional capacity for self-restraint that would normally have prevented them from taking drugs and other substances for non-therapeutic purposes in the rst place.
