The Task as Environment

for Learning

Task Demands:

Cognitive - concepts, and understanding the world

Language - foreign language and related L1
Interactional - whole, group, pair, teacher
Metalinguistic - language about language

Balancing Demands and Support

The Goldilocks Principle A task must be demanding but not too demanding, that
provides support, but not too much support.
Work within the ZPD or the space for growth.

Language Goals
Obviously, language goals are necessary.
But careful. Too many too soon and your
students will become fearful of English.
