Comprehension Strategy:
Make Prediction
-When you read myths, you can use clues in
the text to make predictions about what
will happen next.
- You can confirm or revise prediction as
necessary.
- Predictions based on text evidence are valid
predictions. Often times revisiting
predictions based on the twists and turns of
a captivating plot helps you stay focused and
makes the reading more interesting.

Genre: Myth
The following are key characteristics of
myth:
-A myth is a story passed down from
generation to generation , most often
as oral tradition. They have no known
author.
-They are told again and again
because stories express the belief of
a culture. The believes often have to
do with what values are important to
the people or how natural
occurrences or phenomena of nature
came to be. Myths often are told to
help explain for natural
occurrences.
- Myths can often involve superhuman
characters or creatures. Non-human
characters give myths their largerthan-life quality.

Vocabulary Strategy: Word


Origins
-Many words in modern English have word
origins in Greek, Latin, or Old English.
-Words with shared origins have similar
meanings.
Examples:
evaporatus- Latin, "Turn into vapor"
leidra- Old English, "of early birth"
han - Old English , "Sharpening stone"
sollemnis- Latin, "Official"

Comprehension Skill: Problem and


Solution
-In a myth, the characters may include people,

animals, and personified forces of nature, such as


wind and rain. The plot often describes how the
main character solves the problem.
-Characters, setting, and plot are the story elements
that are common to all to all works of fiction.
- The story problems in a myth may involve real or
mythical enemies. It may present a situation that
requires change. The problem may even involve
information the character must discover like a lesson
to be learned.
-The solution in a myth often requires many steps
leading to the outcome.
