1. Explain the meaning of the U.N . emblem.


The U.N. emblem is a design of a map of the world with the North Pole pictured on it. There are branches
from an olive tree around the world that criss cross each other. The olive branches represent the
meaning of peace and the world map symbolizes the areas that are included in the United Nations.
2. How many countries are included in the U.N. today?
In the U.N. today there are 193 members that participate in the United Nations.
3. How might you describe the U.N. General Assembly? What happens when it convenes?
The General Assembly is basically the leadership of the U.N. They make the final say in situations and
policy making. When the General Assembly convenes each nation that takes part in the meetings get
one vote each.

Does the General Assemblys vote matter? Why or why not?

When voting on important matters, the General Assemblys vote does matter. It matters because the
General Assembly is made up of 193 members and 2/3s of those that are there have to vote.
5. What is unique about the U.N.s headquarters?
The U.N. has a headquarters. The headquarters can be quite unique because of its location. The
location of the United Nations headquarters is in New York, not really far from where we live in
Pennsylvania.
6. What are the main goals of the U.N.?
Like any organization, the United Nations have goals. Their goals that they want to
accomplish are ways to decrease chances of war, establishing equal rights and maintaining
the rights, freedom, safety/security and peace in the world.
7. Identify at least two challenges that exist in following the U.N. principles.

The U.N. principles are not using a force and settling the differences countries have
peacefully.
8. What was the League of Nations, and how does it relate to the U.N.?
The League of Nations was an intercontinental organization. The League of Nations primary
goals were to keep peace between countries. The U.N.s goal is to control security and
peace in the world and the League of Nations came about to control peace throughout
countries, which is why this related to the U.N.
9. In what ways was the League of Nations an example of early globalization? Identify at
least two.
The League of Nations communicated well and had experience in working together.
The League of Nations was an example of early globalization because the organization was
created in Paris, yet the Germans and Japanese as well. Even though the League of Nation
failed to maintain peace with japan this organization spread throughout the place it was
founded.
10. Why did the League of Nations fail? Name at least two reason.
The reasons why the League of Nations failed was because it lacked representations of
countries. Two examples are the Japanese Invasion of China and the Second World War
when the Germans expansion under Adolf Hitler.
11. In what year was the U.N. created? What was happening at that time?
The U.N. was signed in October 1945, but created in june 1945. At the time that the League
of Nations was created right after the Second World War to possibly help with future
problems happening because the League of Nations was ineffective.
12. How many countries originally joined the U.N.?

When the United Nations was first thought of there were 50 countries that originally joined
together at the United Nations Conference.

14. What is the U.N.s Security Council and what countries are involved with it?
The U.N. is split into branches and one of them branches is known as the Security Council.
The Security Council is recognized for making certain decisions. These decisions and the
resolutions that follow have to deal with the peace and security of countries.
15. Why might the structure and operation of the Security Council be problematic? In
other words, what principle does it appear to violate? Identify two issues.
I think the Security Council Violates the issues of racism and the rights of humans.
16. Who is the newest U.N. member, and what noteworthy nations are not members of the
U.N.? Why has U.N. membership grown?
South Sudan is the newest member. Taiwan and Vatican are non-members and the U.N.
grew. The U.N. grew because the countries were becoming independent and Soviet Union
broke up.
17. How is the U.N. funded?
The U.N. is funded by contributed to the U.N. fund. All countries involved give money.
18. Identify and six organizational bodies of the U.N. Complete the chart with information
about their purpose as well as details you find interesting or important.

General Assembly - represents the order of everything, every country gets one vote

Security Council - makes decisions based on the issues of safety and peace making

Economic and Social Council - promotion of international co-op and development

International Court of Justice - the primary judicial branch of the U.N., the binding of
court issues

Secretariat - it controls day to day work, facilities, supplies

Trusteeship Council - ensures trust territories, inactive at the moment

1. The U.N. also has separate organizations that work to meet its goals. List four
different groups or goals these organizations work to help or promote (NOT the
names of the organizations).
The U.N. has separate organizations to meet goals. Examples of these organizations are
reducing poverty, increasing childrens health and fighting for the hungry
2. What is the title of the U.N.s leader, and who currently holds this position? How is
this position used to counterbalance the strength of some U.N. members?
Ban Ki-moon is the United Nations leader and he is known as the Secretary General. This
position is used to keep balance between the countries in case of disputes within the U.N.
3. What do you feel is the future of the U.N.? Does it have a place in todays world?
Why or why not? What can it do to improve its position? Write a 5-6 sentence paragraph
explaining your views.
The United Nations is very interesting to me. I feel that the future of the U.N. is possible. I
think they do have flaws that can be improved with some work, like becoming stronger with
dealing with issues. They may have a place in the world today, but I think they need to
become stronger and demand for peace in the world.
