Faculty Advisors Message

Establishment of IIE chapter in Gaza strip is considered a turning
point for the Industrial Engineering Department at IUG since it
gives opportunities for our students to be in touch with other IEs
worldwide and thus gives them opportunities to interact with
them and to be up to date with the curriculum, activities and
whatever changes that are taking place in this field. The purpose
of IIE chapter will be further strengthen the power of our students
and their reputation worldwide and thus it is important for all
students to be members in the chapter and I do encourage every
student to be part of it since it can update them on whatever is
happening in industrial engineering arena. Further, I would
recommend that all our faculty members to be active members in
this area in order to encourage our students and be with them in
all they need.

Weve received a Golden Award in our First

year!
By Alyaa Abushaban
Receiving a Golden Award for the Chapter Activity Report in our first year is a great thing to consider,
especially if we compare difficulties weve faced to
achievements weve made. However, this is only the
beginning and many international competitions and awards
are waiting. This is a brief description of our 2013-2014
activities:
On Sep. 9th, the IIE IUG Student Chapter with number 702
was certificated from the Institute of Industrial Engineers
headquarter, and we were ready to start.
Starting with 13 members, the Opening Ceremony
was held on Sep. 24th, at the Islamic
University of Gaza to introduce the
chapter to the IUG community.
On Oct. 31st, 2013, the female
section organized a plant tour for IE
students to many industrial sites.
Another plant tour, was made in
February 2014, targeting engineering
freshmen. Promotion activities also
included Whats IE? lectures and
many brochures to introduce IE and IIE.
On November, 2013, a group of IIE senior
graduate members completed Finding a Job is a
Job course with coordination of the Continuous
Learning Deanship in the IUG. The chapter
organized Introduction to Microsoft
Excel and Advanced Excel courses, with
IE Reem Mohanna. In addition, many
workshops, on the academic and practical
sides, were held during the year.
As industrial engineering students, we know well the importance of
continuous improvement, therefore, in January, 2014, Strategic
Planning Workshop was held with guidance of IE Israa Ismail and participation of
all members and officers to assure our goals and update the chapters objectives.

On the social side, the chapter made some

unique activities, these included a visit to
an Orphans Institute and Because we all
live on one earth Campaign, which was
made to revive hope in the hearts of the
people of Gaza, who live under strict
siege since 2006.
The End of the year Ceremony was
finally celebrated on May 12th, 2014
with attendance of the Palestinian
Industries Union representatives. It was a
chance to thank every supporter and to
honor members for their work.
The chapters Summer Vacation Plan was
disturbed due to the Israeli aggression on
Gaza which directly affected the chapters
members. Activities that were to be made
include two training courses for IE students:
Programming Using MATLAB and
Engineering Drawing with AutoCAD and an
introductory lecture for fresh IE students.
As nothing can stop us, the introductory
lecture to industrial engineering was delayed to the
beginning of the first semester in 2014-2015.
The chapter participated in the fifth Conference for
Engineering and Technology that was held by the
Engineering College at the Islamic University of Gaza
(10 - 12) Dec 2014.
As for online courses, Product Design and
Development training course with Dr. Husam Arman
from University of Nottingham, was held.
Here we are, coming with higher morale and better experience to go on with more interesting activities
and new members.

What Makes IEs the Dark

Horse??
By IE Mohammad Jarboue

The Palestinian economy suffers the dilemma of

needs variety, priorities conflict, and resource
shortage. Engineering it traditionally depending on
mathematical & technical skills will never get our
national economy out of its red. Industrial Engineers
are the only ones who are able to come up with the
innovative solutions we are all long for. The
innovation for industrial engineers is not a word to
say, its a diverse knowledge, a bird's-eye vision that
emerges the varied perspectives, and above all a
compromising thought that fulfills the conflicting
priorities.
The aforementioned competencies are what make the industrial engineers like the dark
horse which had never been thought of, rushed past the grandstand in sweeping triumph.
To the Palestinian industrial engineers, here is the chance opens the door widely for you
to become our national dark horse. So, be proud of being IE and let the industrial
engineering rounds your competences and get the best out of you.

YOU can share your experience as an IE student or graduate via IIE IUG Newsletter. For

Meet IE Hamdy Salman

I earned my undergraduate degree in Industrial
Engineering from the Islamic University of Gaza in 2012. I
worked as a teaching assistant in the Industrial Engineering
department for one year. The position gave me the
opportunity to interact with both the industrial and
academic environment. Moreover, I feel that a lot more
can be accomplished in the industrial sector in my country,
and that requires an advanced level of education. This is
the key reason that motivated me to go for higher studies
in the field of Industrial engineering. Currently, I am a
Fulbright scholar studying a Masters degree in Industrial
Engineering at Swanson school of Engineering, University
of Pittsburgh, USA. I was working as a teaching assistant for probability and statistics class in
Pittsburgh last year. I have worked on a simulation project to evaluate the feasibility of locating
a Tier-1 Auto supplier for General Motors with respect to multiple Original Equipment
Manufacturers (OEMS) according to Just in Time/Just in Sequence philosophies. I am
enthusiastic to carry out research in the fields of simulation optimization, experimental design
and operations research.
Finally, I believe that hard work and reading are two important keys to a successful career.

Attention:
To IIE members,
Do NOT miss the next meeting on Tuesday, Feb.17, 2015.
This meeting is your opportunity to give your suggestions to both IIE and the IE department

Meet IE Said Matr

Tell us a bit about yourself and your
educational background.
First I would like to thank you for this generous
opportunity. My name is Said J. Matr. I am an
Industrial Engineer and I have graduated as first
ranked student from IE department in Islamic
University of Gaza (IUG). I finished my master
degree at the faculty of business in Humboldt
University-Berlin where I got a Master of Science
in Economy and Management Science.

Where did you work after graduation?

I worked as a Teaching Assistant in the IE Department at IUG. In Germany, I also worked as a
Research Assistant at Technischen Universitt Berlin (TU Berlin).Basically, these positions gave
me so many experiences and added to my personality a lot of skills through dealing with different
kinds of students, researchers and lecturers, and leading a group of students to achieve their
goals. Moreover, these jobs enabled me to deal with specialists in the academic field and to be
familiar with the academic life and its interactions.

What are your areas of interest?

I have a strong background in the field of management, economic as well as quantitative
methods. Related to these areas of interest, I am very familiar with deterministic and stochastic
decision making models and its applications in various areas like production planning and
controlling, engineering economy, quality planning, and project managing and scheduling.
Besides, I have a good knowledge in econometric, mathematic calculus, and operations research
techniques. Lately, I have become more interested in Innovation Management.

We have heard that your MSC thesis was published at The Institute of
Operations Research so could you tell us a bit about it?
My thesis dealt with the new-product adoption models in which I applied the dynamic
programming technique to come up with a modification of one of the superior models. The thesis
consists of theoretical part dealing with a market diffusion model as an optimization problem. In
addition, the second part is more of practical test of the general model in case of specific settings
and a sensitivity analysis.

What advice would you give IE students?

"Usually, the industrial engineers during studying time do not know in advance about the field of
their professional career, therefore, the one should focus on all the fields and topics in the
university. Later in you professional life there will be a specific track which you will master with
the help of the basics and the knowledge you gain in the IE department. Moreover, I would
recommend dear colleagues to spend more time on developing these practical skills and their
computer skills as well.
At the end, I quote: Be Kind; Everyone You Meet is Fighting a Hard Battle.
