Roman Clothing in General

Clothing and recognition of status were extremely
important when trying to show power
Clothing was designed to identify social status of
wearer
Lowest social classes wore plain tunics and higher
social classes wore distinctively marked garments

Tunics
There were two types of tunics: Tunica Interior
and Tunica Exterior
Tunics were made out of wool

Pants
Originally, there were no pants in Roman Clothing
They were later added and called Gallic Bracae

Togas
Was a sign of roman
citizenship
Made out of heavy white
wool that fell to the feet
Mandatory for Romans to
wear togas to formal
events
No foreigners wore togas
When a citizen was
banished, he left his toga
along with his civil rights

Womens Clothing
Didnt vary much for
centuries
Matrons wore the stola
Most dresses used a belt to
shorten the length
Chitons were tunics for
women
The peplos was also a
commonly worn dress
