Symptoms

Pain when you pass urine

Grequent and urgent need to urinate
Cloudy, dark or strong smelling urine
Hematuria
Pain: lower abdomen or lower back
Tiredness or feeling unwell
Mild fever

Women ARE MORE LIKELY to get

cystitis

Urynalisis

Support the diagnosis if the clinical presentation is not typical as the absence of
pyuria (pus) suggests a diagnosis other than urinary tract infection.

Urine culture
Helpful if there is reason to suspect
antimicrobial resistance.

Treatment

Painkillers: ease the pain

Paracetamol and ibuprofen
They may also help if you have a fever or a temperature.

Antibiotics: symptoms clear within 3 8 days

Trimethoprim and nitrofurantoin
