English II Syllabus Second Semester

Welcome back Students and Parents! I hope that your break was both enjoyable and restful. As we embark upon
the second half of the school year, I would like to present an updated class syllabus as well as class expectations .
Please carefully read and review anticipated units of instruction and class expectations. Do not hesitate to contact

Units for Composition Writing Unit
Essays = 100 points each**
1. Narrative Essay
2. Persuasive Essay and Speech
3. Comparison/Contrast Essay
4. Descriptive Essay
5. Research Essay
6. Literary Analysis
7. Creative Writings
**Research project is worth 150 points
Quizzes = 40 - 50 points each
1. Scheduled and unscheduled quizzes
Tests = 50 100 points
Special test points = Students may receive up to 10 additional test points for completing
mandatory test preparation, such as EOC, SRI and other state tests.

Article of the Week: Students will be expected to complete an article of the week, in
which they thoroughly read, analyze and summarize text through annotation. This weekly

homework assignment is worth 50 points. Additionally, students will continue to


extensively practice grammar and reading skills, as well as constant review.
Grading scale and explanation
A = 90-100%
B = 80-90%
C = 70-80%
D = 60-70%
F = 60% and below
**per district policy 30% of a students total grade will consist of classwork; 70% of total grade consists of tests,
quizzes, exams, including EOC (end of course exam).

Come to class on time Any student who is not already in class when the bell sounds is marked tardy.
Three tardies will result in a 2-hour detention. Four or more tardies will result in further disciplinary
actions per district policy.
Be Prepared Students are expected to come to class prepared with pencils, paper, English notebook and
any other assigned items.
Participate Students are expected to participate in class.
Plagiarism/cheating is not tolerated and will result in an automatic zero. Additionally, students must place
phones, book bags, etc. in front of class during exams and tests.
Students will be given 2 hall passes per quarter please use them and your time wisely.
Harassment and or bullying will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
IMPORTANT Per district policy, electronic devices are PROHIBITED from use during class instruction.
When not used as a learning aid, they distract from the learning process - this includes headphones,
earbuds, etc. Due to several disruptions during the learning process last semester, it is necessary to
adhere to this policy and it will be strictly enforced.

Severe behavior disruptions or impact to other students learning may result in immediate removal
from the class by school security.
Absences

It is the students responsibility to notify the teacher and receive any missed work due to an excused absence. You
will have the same amount of days you were absent to complete and turn in the work.
Late Work/ Missing Work/Class Work Policy

Assignments assigned in class are due in class the same day. Assignments not turned in will result in a zero**
Late Homework For each school day an assignment is late, a 10% deduction in the grade earned by the
student will occur with a maximum 30% deduction. Late homework will be accepted 5 school days following
the due date with a maximum 30% penalty after 5 days, work will not be accepted and will result in a zero.
Students are allowed this policy three times per quarter following this policy.
Student are allowed to re-take test to improve grade/proficiency after they have satisfied the necessary
after-school help sessions and any related work.

*** Any student called from class by administration, parents, etc. will be given time to complete any in-class
assignments without penalty.
