Newspaper Project Imperialism (Ch 18)


Objective: Create and present an American Newspaper reporting on American Imperialism
during the early 20th century.
Assignment
You will work in your assigned group to create a newspaper or magazine on your assigned topic. Your
newspaper must be at least 4 pages long, on regular printer paper or larger. Each member in your group will be
responsible for at least one (1) news article in the paper related to your topic. Your paper must also include at
least one (1) picture for each article, at least one (1) map relating to your region, at least one (1) Editorial, and at
least one (1) Political Cartoon. You must also include at least one (1) article about current relations between the
United States and your assigned area. Your paper needs to have a name and a publication date, as well as
headlines, by-lines and locations for each article. If your paper will have multiple sections, then section titles
may be necessary for different pages. Spelling and grammar must be error-free and will be graded. Final papers
must include a bibliography of sources for information and pictures used.
Mr. Mash will assign a newspaper editor for each group. It is the editors responsibility to keep a journal
explaining the expectations and contributions of each group member, and make sure that all group members
complete their assignments. This journal will be created using Google Docs, and must be shared with only Mr.
Mash. The editor is required to update this journal each day.
Your group presentations start on Thursday of next week. Each group member is responsible for teaching the
material in their own articles to the class. Each group will present for a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 15
minutes, plan accordingly. Presentation time should be equally divided among all group members
Finally, your group is responsible for writing a short mini-exam, consisting of five (5) Multiple Choice and one
(1) Critical Thinking essay question for the class.
Schedule
Friday 1/30 Explain Project, assign groups and begin research on topic.
Monday 2/2 Continue research and begin writing required articles. Mock up of newspaper due.
Tuesday 2/3 Finish writing and printing articles, begin assembling newspaper.
Wednesday 2/4 Finish Assembling Newspaper, practice presentations.
Thursday 2/5 Presentations begin.
Friday 2/6 Presentations Finish.

15 pts Content (1 news article per person, 1 photo per article, editorial, current relations, map, political cartoon)
15 pts Creativity (Newspaper layout and design: headlines, by-lines, locations, spacing)
5 pts Individual Presentation (Eye contact, subject knowledge, use of index cards, audible)
5 pts Proper Spelling and Grammar in Newspaper; Bibliography
5 pts Work Ethic (Observation of time use by Mr. Mash, and from editors daily journal)
5 pts Mini-exam for the class
Total 50 Pts
