LESSON PLAN FORMAT
Name: Carly Stockert
Grade Level: 1st Grade Special Education Classroom
School: Madison Elementary School
Date: 11/17/14
Time: 12:50-1:20
Reflection from prior lesson: I have seen Ernesto working with the cooperating teacher in the classroom and I have
observed a few things while I have been watching him. I have noticed that he works really well in the classroom
when there is one on one work with the teacher. He struggles with his basic math skills and especially counting
backwards higher than 11s and 12s but does well with number recognition.
Lesson Goal(s) / Standards:
Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones, e.g., by using objects
or drawings, and record each composition or decomposition by a drawing or equation (such as 18 = 10 +
8); understand that these numbers are composed of ten ones and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight,
or nine ones.
Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings1, sounds (e.g., claps),
and acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.
Lesson Objectives: Ernesto is going to be able to more easily subtract with his 11s and 12s, be able to count
backwards from 12 and count by 5s.
Materials Needed: Number board, worksheet that helps him with his 5s, the white board, practice number problems,
number template activity, and polar bear game.
Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics:
Introduction (3 minutes)
Today we are going to be working with your subtraction numbers and then at the end we are going to
play a subtraction game.
You have been working with your 11s and 12s with your subtraction so that is what we are going to
focus on today.
We are also going to be reviewing a little bit with your counting by 5s.
