1.RacialH atred
Context: I Am Joaquin -Rodolfo Corky Gonzales: In
the muck of exploitation and in the fierce hear of
racial hatred.
My Guess: Anger toward a certain race.
Dictionary Definition: noun, feelings and acts of
prejudice and hostility towards an ethnic group in
various degrees.
Why it Matters: Racial hatred is the topic of interest
of the poem of its time period. Gonzales makes the
character of Joaquin, who has been oppressed and
the oppressor.
Critical Thinking Question: How has racial hatred
affected Joaquins motives?

The image shows that no matter what


race a person is, they should stand
together, hand-in-hand. Holding
hands symbolizes unity between
these people.

Context: I Am Joaquin -Rodolfo Corky Gonzales: In
a country that has wiped out all my history, stifled
all my pride..
My Guess: Records of the past.
Dictionary Definition: noun, plural noun: histories.
The study of past events, particularly in human affairs.

Why it Matters: Throughout the poem it reflects of


the history of Joaquin. History clearly captures the
definition of the question, Who Am I?

details of the past can still be
relevant in the present.

3.Agency
Context: Edward James Olmoss film Walk Out
My Guess: A group of people gathered to serve a
purpose.
Dictionary Definition: noun: agency; plural noun: agencies. A
business or organization established to provide a particular
service, typically one that involves organizing transactions
between two other parties.

Why it Matters: In the film, the students were the


oppressed and the school society were the oppressors.
So the students formed an agency to let their voices be
heard.
Critical Thinking Question: How would the protests be
different if only the parents protested and not the
students?

they were to gather together. The
freedom of speech highly benefits
these student protests.

4.Activism
Context: Edward James Olmoss film Walk Out
My Guess: A way to improve the conditions of a
certain group.
Dictionary Definition: noun: the policy or action of
using vigorous campaigning to bring about political or
social change.

Why it Matters: The film showed that through


activism, anyone can make a change. If people
are passionate enough it can get done.
Critical Thinking Question: Do violent protests
work more effectively than non-violent protests?

Based on the film, anyone, no matter

how old a person is, can be an


activist. As long as its done the right
way, the changes will be made. The
image shows that even the youth
can make a change.

5.Typecast
Context: Robert Heilbroners Dont let stereotypes

My Guess: Judging someone or something based on
previous experience.
Dictionary Definition: verb: represent or regard (a
person or their role) as a stereotype.

Why it Matters: We typecast people because we


think we know them based on people we find similar
to them, but in reality we are already jumping to
conclusions without making any real observations.
Critical Thinking Question: Does typecast hurt or
help observations in todays society?

We even typecast mice or rats. We

believe mice like cheese, thats


because thats the picture we were
always shown as children. We
shouldnt typecast people because
everyone is their own individual and
everyone is different.

6.Prejudice
Context: Robert Heilbroners Dont let

My Guess: having hate toward a certain group
Dictionary Definition: noun: preconceived opinion
that is not based on reason or actual experience.

Why it Matters: We experience prejudice often.


Whether we are in school, work, or even in the
grocery store. Prejudice is very negative and can
have a heavy affect on how people interact with
others.
Critical Thinking Question: In what ways can
prejudice be reduced in schools?

Prejudice is what society has been

dealing with for a very long time. The


picture above shows a colored man
trying to get a friendly hand shake
from a white man but for whatever
reason the white man wont shake
his hand.

7.Allocation
Context: Jack McCurdys Frivolous to Fundamental
My Guess: Accusing someone of something
negative.
Dictionary Definition: noun: an amount or portion of a
resource assigned to a particular recipient.

Why it Matters: If equal education were to happen


that means equal amount of resources are
suppose to be distributed to each students. So that
each student has an equal chance of succeeding
as another student.
Critical Thinking Question: How can schools do a
better job of allocating of its resources?

Allocating resources equal can be a

challenge. Considering the amount of


students and amount of resources may
or may not have. But sometimes
resources arent being distributed evenly
because the higher class want to keep
the lower class poor.

8.Econom ic D isparity

My Guess: Financial Troubles
Dictionary Definition: noun: The difference between
the incomes of the richer and poorer parts of society.

Why it Matters: The gap between the rich and


poor is getting wider. Resulting in a population
that is either really rich or in poverty. This also
determines the educational status because of the
income they receive.
Critical Thinking Question: Why does economic
disparity matter in education?

The picture above shows that in 2009

that the Top 1% own almost 40% of the


wealth in the U.S. and the bottom 80%
only own around 13% of the wealth. So
most of the population is poor, while the
1% (the few there is) get almost half of
the wealth.

9.Victim ize
Context: Richard Valencias The Mexican-American
Struggle for Equal Educational Opportunity in
Mendez v. Westminster
My Guess: Being taken advantage of.
Dictionary Definition: verb: single (someone) out for
cruel or unjust treatment.

Why it Matters: In the educational system,


students are victimized because of their race,
ethnicity, religion, and income. Equal education
cant be achieved if students are being put down.
Critical Thinking Question: How does
victimization affect a students educational career?

be victimized by their peers as well


as school faculty and staff. The
reasons for victimization varies to
things like: race, income, clothing,
and much more especially in
someones appearance.
