SCIENCE FORCESLESSON PLAN

Defning Success

Doris Sosa 5th Grade

Date: November 07, 2007

OBJECTIVE. What will your students will be able to do by the end of class?

Standards Covered:
S5C2PO1; S5C2PO2; S5C2PO4
Learning Objectives:
1. SWBAT Describe the following forces:
a. Gravity
b. Friction
2. SWBAT Describe the various effects forces can have on an object (e.g. cause motion,
halt motion, change direction of motion, cause deformation.)
3. SWBAT . Demonstrate effects of variables on an objects motion

Language Objectives:
1. SWBAT Describe verbally gravity and Friction

ASSESSMENT. How will you know

concretely that all of your students
have mastered the objective?

KEY POINTS. What three to fve main

ideas or steps will you emphasize in
your lesson?

Lesson Cycle

Test on Friday

1. Force is a push or pull that

makes an object move, or
change direction.
2. Push is force pressed against
something to make it move
forward, outward or upward
3. Pull is the forces that moves
something toward or nearer
4. Gravity is the earths pulling force
that makes things fall and gives
things weight.
5. Friction is a force that occurs
when two objects rub against
each other. It slows or stops
mobbing objects.

ANTICIPATORY SET. How will you focus, prepare and engage students
for the lessons objective?

MATERIALS.

Who knows the game tag of war? .

What can you tell me about it?

How long do you think the longest tug of war lasted?

Ball
Book
Coins
String

INTRODUCTION OF NEW MATERIAL. How will you convey the

knowledge and/or skills of the lesson? What will your students be
doing to process this information?
Gather the Tennis ball and the book. One at a time, throw the tennis ball into
the air, pick up the book, and roll the tennis ball along the floor and drop the
book on the floor. As you put each item into motion, direct the students to
observe what type of movement is occurring.
1. Explain to students that in order to move an object or put it into motion
you have to give it a push or a pull. Scientists call this push or pull
force. (give definition for push and pull force)
2. Ask students what type of movement occurred with each actiona
push or a pull. (throwing/pushing the ball into the air, picking up/pulling
the book, rolling/pushing the ball along the floor, and dropping/pushing
the book)
3. Using background information to discuss gravity and friction. Then
throw the ball back up in the air. Ask students which force they think
brings the ball back down. (Gravity) Explain that without gravity, things
would not stay on the ground, next, slowly roll the ball along the floor.
Ask students to identify which force makes the balls speed decrease.
and eventually stop. (friction) Explain that the friction is caused by the
floor pushing against the ball and reducing its movement or motion.
Further explain that without friction, things would slip and slide away
form each other.
4. Share the fantastic facts about force on the bottom of the page.

Eraser
Empty plastic
bottle
Graphic
Organizers

GUIDED PRACTICE. In what ways will your learners attempt to

explain or do what you have outlined? How will you monitor and
coach their performance?
1. Pair students and provide each pair with various objects, such as a
coin, a length of string, and eraser, and empty plastic bottle, , direct
each pair to use the object to demonstrate each type of force
demonstration.
2. Afterwards have each pair share its demonstrations and information of
its chart to the class.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE. In what ways will your different learners attempt
the objective on their own? How will you gauge mastery?
Give each student a graphic organizer. (see attached). Instruct the student to
follow the directions on the sheet for completing the activity.
CLOSING. How will you have students summarize what theyve learned? How
will reinforce the objectives importance and its link to past and future
learning?
Ask the students to think of one force and its action ( Push, pull, force) and
be ready to be call on

Fantastic Facts About Force!

The British scientist, Sir Isaac Newton, war able to describe that force of gravity after
being hit on the head by a falling apple!
In order to break thought the earths gravitational pull, rockets are space shuttles must
reach speeds of 25,000 miles per hour!
The Longest record pull in a tug of war took place between Ireland and England during
the World Championship in 1988. It lasted 24 minutes and 45seconds!
You would weigh almost three times as much on Jupiter as you weigh on Earth!

Some racing cars travel so fast that when their breaks are put on, they glow red
because of the friction between the disc pads on the discs!

Coin

We rolled the coin

along the floor.

String

We used the string

in a tug of war.

Eraser

We threw it into
the air.

Coin, Eraser,
Plastic Bottle

We put the eraser

and coin into the
bottle. We rolled
the bottle across
the floor.

May The Force Be With You!

Force is not just something found in science fiction moviesits all around us! Forces allow us to
breathe, walk, and even sing! Below is a list of everyday activities. Identify the force push, pull,
gravity, or frictionbeing demonstrated in each activity; then explain your answer. Write your answer
in the space provides.
