Women

1800s 1900s

Women in the 1800s and 1900s put a huge amount of

effort towards changing Canadian women rights back
then. Now in the twentieth century we can not even
imagine a world of not being able to do things what we
do now. Canada is so grateful for the women who
changed the society for us.

Women
1800s-1900s

No right no vote

No ownership of property

Some not allowed to work, some in harsh conditions

Huge difference between wealthy women and less fortunate

ones

2015

Women are able to vote freely like men

Own property and have freedom of speech

Work and earn just the same amount of money as their

husbands

In school we create groups in order to discuss new ideas

and topics
We cooperate with each other to either debate, share
knowledge, or express something we believe in. Knowing
a group of women that did something like that..

Presenting you The Famous Five! Theyre called this because of

their desire to change society. They each had a role in helping
to change in years before then decided to come together. The
group consisted of Emily Murphy, Irene Parbly , Louise
McKinney and Henertta Muir Edwards. Their mission was to be
able to have women have they're own seat in the senate.

conization of The Famous Five

Canada is grateful for the work of the famous five, with
congratulation they dedicated the 2001 50 dollar bill to
The Famous Five, they place a monument on Parliament
hill in Ottawa and they created a foundation for them.

Why did the women have less

privileges???
Women where not considered persons under the
BNA act of 1867, yes if they committed a crime
they were now held accountable and could
receive a punishment or put into jail. The men
who were in the senate were mostly Christians
or catholic that praised the bible. The bible said
that the man was not made for the women but
for the women for the man they took this as no
women could not live up the standards of a
man.

More info
Before the persons act declared women were persons
they were not able sue someone, vote and buy a
property on theyre own. Women were basically a
property of men.
what if the husband died?
If the husband ever died from war or any type of injury
the house paper work would be handed over to the
oldest man on the husbands side of the family. If the wife
was unlucky, she would have been kicked out and would
of needed to find another place to live

What problems did they face as

women??
The major problem women faced was equality, abuse
from husbands and other unpaying work. If women were
able to work, they earned far less from theyre husbands.
They worked harsh labour for little money and countless
hours

Women today still face the problem of equality in Canada

and some still do earn less than men. But we still are
thankful for the dedicated work from they women in the
1800s. of course there were people who were not
disused here but still played a roll. Today we have many
women role models and feminists to look up to but where
will females be in the next 50 years
