Question(s)

In a practical joke, the squad decide to push Ron off a cliff. They
sneak behind him and launch him in the air at an angle of 30
degrees to the top of the cliff at 10 metres per second. Despite his
flailing Ron experiences no air resistance. If the cliff is 60 metres
high and at the base of the cliff is the sea and a rocky shore, where
the sea begins at 35 metres from the base of the cliff. Will Ron land
on the rocky shore or in the sea?
If a vertical velocity of 30 metres per second when hitting the rocky
shore is sufficient to kill Ron or a vertical velocity of 35 metres per
second when hitting the water. Will Ron survive or will he die?
It will take Ron approximately 5 seconds before he gets sufficiently
scared to shit himself, will Ron need to buy some new underwear if
he survives?
[ Take g = 9.81 metres per second squared, Answer to 2 d.p ]
Solution
(Vertically)
S
-60
U
10sin60 = 5
V
A
-9.81
T
S
= UT + 0.5AT2
-60 = (5)T + (-4.905)T2
4.905 T2 5T 60 = 0
T = -3.0248 seconds
T = 4.0441 seconds
Therefore, Ron is in the air for 4.0441 seconds, he doesnt need to
get some new underwear if he survives

Horizontal distance travelled:

No air resistance, therefore we may assume that Rons horizontal
speed doesnt change.
S
S

= VT
= 10cos30 x 4.0441

S = 35.0229 metres
Therefore, Ron lands in the sea at vertical speed less than 35 metres
per second. He will survive.
