Learner prior knowledge/learner background experiences:

paragraph. Students also have a prior knowledge of dental health, as it has been a previously
addressed standard.
Materials and resources needed:
-graphic organizer
-paper
-toothbrushes and toothpaste
-crayons
-pencils
Teaching strategies:
Differentiation strategies should be infused throughout. Differentiate for content,
product, and process.
Introductory strategies

The teacher would introduce the topic with a quick clip of how to brush your teeth. The
teacher would explain to the students that the month of February was dental hygiene
month. The teacher would go on by saying stating the importance of brushing our teeth.

Main instructional strategies

The teacher would then teach a mini-lesson on ways in which you can write in a how-to
pattern. The teacher would pass out toothbrushes and toothpaste to each student. This
will allow the students to recall the process. The teacher would begin the students on the
writing process. The students would begin with brainstorming and writing down what
they did when they got their toothbrushes. This will help recall the information and help
students describe the way in which they brush their teeth in the morning. The students
will complete a first draft following this. The teacher will help students determine
phrasing in writing down their thoughts. The students will then do peer editing on their
papers. The teacher will observe this process to make sure the students are complicit in
their review of others work. The students will then complete the final product.

Concluding strategies
The teacher will end the lesson by reviewing the good practices of brushing teeth. The
teacher will ask students if they would like to demonstrate their good practices in front of
the class. This will allow each student to collaborate on whether or not their practices are
different or similar.

Assessment (utilize a blend of traditional and performance assessments):

This lesson will be assessed using a rubric to grade the students final product on the How-To
writing. The students would get points for moving through the writing process and would get the
most amount of points for their final draft.
