Problem Statement/Justification

Problem: Design a water filter that is

efficient, durable, and simple.
Justification: Nearly 2 million children
world wide die every year from lack of
clean water.
Criteria:

Must be able to filter 250mL of water out of

100mL
Must perform task within 5 minutes
Must have a resulting turbidity under 10

Team Roles

Nick: Research, Final Sketch, Materials,

Idea Development
Justin: Gantt Chart, Initial Sketching,
Documentation
Group: Construction, Decision Matrix

Researching Existing
Solutions

The following are a few existing

solutions that are both simple and
feasible when it comes to building our
own filter.

Sediment Filters
Layers of sediments of varying sizes,
separated by a permeable membrane.

Wound Fibers
Spooled cloth fibers form a cylinder that
allows water to pass through.

Researching Existing
Solutions
Lifestraw
This design was less practical for us
because we didnt want to drink the
water, however, the hollow fiber
membrane is an interesting way to
filter.
Evaporation Filtration
Although this method cleans
water very effectively, it takes
too long.

Final Drawings

Bill of Materials

2-liter bottle
Wire mesh
White t-shirt
Coffee filters
Rubber bands
Adhesive tape

Solution Justification

The design used mainly coffee filters and

scrap pieces of cloth (durable and easily
replaceable)
The main filter is a removable square of
chicken wire wrapped in cloth.
With the main filter being very durable
the other filters would require little
maintenance.
Could be used on the go due to its use of
light material.

Testing Procedure

Testing Steps:

Initial Test was run before final testing

Dirty water was poured through our filter
Our test was timed (5 minutes allowed)
Timer was stopped after 250mL were
filtered
A sample of the filter water was tested for
its turbidity

Test Results

Turbidity Reading: 4.1

Time: 4 minutes 52 seconds
