Advocacy Advertising: Media Analysis

Learning Goals:
We will analyze an advertisement and then create and present a media product in the form of a
slideshow to demonstrate our understanding of how media works.
Formative Task Instructions:
1. Review the Power Point, Advocacy Advertising posted under 4UI Short Stories on jhssenglishbrooks.weebly.com. These are several examples of media texts which will help you to complete
your own media analysis and posted presentation assignment.
2. Complete questions # 1-4 at the end of the Power Point presentation. You must submit your
answers with the Summative Assignment.
Summative Assignment:
Increasingly, corporations, non-profit organizations, and governments are using advertising and
marketing to promote images and ideas. This advocacy advertising is usually less direct than productselling advertising.
1. Research a variety of organizations and their advertisements and choose ONE to evaluate.
2. Create a brief presentation (5 minutes) alone or with a partner.
3. Your presentation must include:
visual examples of some of the ways your organization uses advertising and marketing to
promote ideas;
Evaluation of the effectiveness of the media texts you present. Use the questions you
answered about the sample texts as guides for your analysis.
4. Submit the answers to the formative questions.
