Bibliographical Essay Project

Topic Proposal

Parkinsons Disease is a neurodegenerative movement disorder. It is caused

by the death of dopamine generating neurons in the central nervous system. The
cause of these cells death is currently unknown. The course of the disease is fairly
conserved in most presentations, following the same course with the major
variability being the difference in time spent at each stage. The first and most
noticeable symptom is shakiness or tremor or other movement type symptom.
Cognitive and emotional problems can also manifest themselves later in the
disease. Parkinsons disease is always a progressive disease and is eventually fatal.
There is currently no known cure for Parkinsons Disease. When a patient
presents to a clinic there are still a number of treatment options to help slow the
progression of the disease down, as well as numerous trails testing how well new
treatments work to help patients of this terrible disease. Being able to summarize
where all the information on new or existing treatments, as well as the expected
course and prognosis of the disease would be a critical resources to families and
patients affect by Parkinsons.
The first section of the essay would be about the signs and symptoms of the
disease, as well as the prognosis and possible causes. Places like hospital websites
as well as medical literature would be a good place to start. Also any scholarly
review articles would be useful at this stage. Next would be the known treatments.
There are many Parkinsons centers for research throughout the world that all have
websites that would be useful. Also being able to use medical reference material
here would be good. Finally, experimental treatments for the disease would be last.
This would require many scholarly journals as well as public databases on clinical
trials that were up to date as possible.
