Guided Reading Lesson Plan
(1) Description of Reading Group Include the grade level (2nd through 5th) as well as the reading level (transitional, self-extending, or
advanced).
4th grade, Self-extending
(2) Quality literature- Include the title, author, genre, a short summary in your own words, and the readability of the text.
10-Year-Old Discovers Supernova, By: Larry Schwartz, article
Kathryn Gray, a 10 year old Canadian stargazer, discovered a supernova (a massive ball of energy and light which is
the result of an exploding star that has run out of fuel) while looking at pictures of a constellation. Once she
submitted the findings to the International Astronomical Union, they confirmed that she was the first person to spot
SN 2010lt.
(3) Lesson focus Describe the strategy/skill that you are targeting.
This lesson will focus on extending students expression of understandings through questioning and summarizing.
(4) Formative assessment- Describe how you will assess students during the guided reading lesson. What behaviors will indicate that your
students get it? What behaviors might indicate that they need further instruction?
I will assess students by asking questions throughout the reading, including the meaning of supernova and
constellation. After the reading, students will complete a B-M-E reading guide which focuses on summarizing and
recalling the information they have just read. I will be able to indicate that students get it when they aptly answer
the questions and recall the information presented in the article. Their drawing of a constellation will also confirm
their understanding of the meaning of a constellation. If students cannot recall events or do not answer questions
during the reading, they may need further instruction and will be pulled into a one-on-one session to assess their
areas for improvement.
