Describing Acids and

Bases
Chapter 7.3 (page 268-273)

Standards and Objectives

Standard 8.5.e
Students will learn the properties
of acids and bases.

Objective 7.3.1
Students will name the properties
of acids and bases.

Key Terms. Which ones do

you already know?

Acid

Corrosive
Indicator

Base

Properties of Acids
Acid: A solution that has an excess
of H+ ions. It comes from the Latin
word acidus that means "sharp" or
"sour".
An acid tastes sour,
reacts with metals and
carbonates, and turns
blue litmus paper red.
Acids have lots of H+
ions!!!

Acid

Indicators
Indicators are compounds

that change color when they

come into contact with an
acid or base.
Litmus paper is an example
of an indicator

Demo: Red Cabbage as a

pH indicator

Demo: Red Cabbage as a pH indicator

Can you think of

substances that
taste sour?

Acids are corrosive

Acids react with certain metals which

seem to disappear this is called
Corrosion.
Corrosion- the ability to wear away other
materials.
Corrosive: Chemical reaction that
destroys or damages (metals, stone,
or other materials).

Acids are considered corrosive

because they eat away at metals
and other materials.

Properties of Acid
Human stomachs
contain hydrochloric
acid to help the
digestive system.
lining of your stomach
is specially built to
survive the acidic
environment.

Properties of Bases

Base: Tastes

bitter, feels slippery,

and turns red litmus paper blue. It
has a pH above 7.

Base

Bitter taste
Bases taste bitter, you can get the
bitter taste from;
Citric peels, coffee, unsweetened
cocoa, tonic water.

Slippery feel
Soaps and shampoos

Slippery feel in the shampoo is a

characteristic of bases.

Strong bases can irritate the skin or

burn it.

Can you think of

things that are
slippery or taste
bitter?

Uses of Bases
Cement: Calcium Oxide
and calcium hydroxide
Glass Cleaners

Baked goods: Baking

soda reacts with acids
to make CO2.
