Lesson Planning Template (Based on Wiggins & McTighe, Damian Cooper & MB Ed)

Grade/Course:

Grade 8 (Mathematics)

Unit:

Shape and Space (Introduction to the unit)

Length of Lesson:

30 minutes (9:00-9:30 am)

Stage 1 Desired Results

1. General and Specific Outcomes (Knowledge, Skills & Attitudes/Values):

General Learning Outcome: Shape and Space (Use direct or indirect measurement to solve
problems)
Specific Learning Outcome: 8.SS.1 Develop and apply the Pythagorean theorem to solve
problems.
Skills: [CN]-connections, [PS]-problem solving, [R]-reasoning,
visualization
2. Essential Questions: The key questions we will answer are

[T]-technology,

[V]-

What is the Pythagorean theorem?

What is the formula and how can it be applied?
What is a right triangle?
3. Students will know. . .
Pythagoras was a Greek philosopher and mathematician whose theory is used to calculate
the length of the sides in a right-angled triangle.
A right triangle includes: legs, which are always the two small sides (variables a and b) and
a hypotenuse, which is always the opposite of the right angle and the longest side (often
known as variable c).
The formula of the Pythagorean theorem is

a2 +b 2=c 2 and its steps to follow.

4. Students will be able to. . .

Use the Pythagorean theorem formula within problem solving in right triangles.
Define two things: what is a Pythagorean theorem and what is a right triangle.

Stage 2 Assessment Evidence (Assessment AS/OF/FOR Learning)

Please indicate the purpose of your strategy by using Assessment Assessment Assessmen

Strategy (Performance Task, Observation Checklist, Interview,

etc.):

Presentation to the class

Examples done on the board as a class

Worksheet

Criteria (Please list i.e. Rubric, Achievement Indicators from

Curriculum, Student or Teacher Generated):

To clearly understand the meaning of a right triangle

and to use the Pythagorean theorem.
A minimum of 80% on the examples on the board
and the worksheet after the lesson will indicate that
the student understands how to properly apply the
Pythagorean theorem to right triangles.
Anything under 80% may indicate that the student
needs further assistance/practice within the subject
area or that further instruction is needed.
Reflection Did these assessment strategies allow you to address the outcomes for
this lesson? Did the students learning meet your objectives?

Rock on Pythagoras video in regards to the

Pythagorean theorem (3 minutes)

Step by step explanation about Pythagoras

and the Pythagorean Theorem

Introduce students to the theorem

Discuss theorem and work through examples

to review information.

Questions in regards to the video to activate

the students prior knowledge.
What were some math concepts and terms
presented in the video? (E.g right triangle,
square roots, hypotenuse, equation, etc)

Practice to label the right triangle (a, b, c, legs,

hypotenuse)
Show the relationship that applies to right
triangles

Visual/Spatial: Use the White board to display

figures

Or if it is easier, I can give them 4-5 examples

to practice individually and to note on a sheet
of paper.

Logical/Mathematical: Showing how the

Pythagorean theorem works for right triangles

Intrapersonal: Solving questions on their own
