JobshadowingallowsCadetTeacherinternstheopportunitytofurtherexploreother
gradesandsubjectareastheymaybeinterestedinpursuingforateachingcareer.
Pleasedothejobshadowingforthetimenormallyrequiredwithyourmentorteacher.
ClearthiswithyourmentorandinformthehighschoolofficeandCadet
instructor/coordinatorofyourchangeinscheduleforthattimeperiod.

Priortothejobshadowyouwillneedtoturninanintakeform,andaftertheevent,an
attendanceformandemployerevaluationformalongwiththecritique.Allformswillbe
availableontheCadetgmailsite.Pleasereturncompletedpaperworktoyour(job
placementcoordinator)attheTechnologyCenter.

APPROPRIATE PAPERWORK (INTAKE FORM, ATTENDANCE FORM, AND


EMPLOYER EVALUATION FORM MUST BE TURNED IN TO MRS.
LINDERMANINORDERTOPARTICIPATE.

The Job Shadow intake form will beusedto generate a job shadow agreement
that will need to be signed by a parent/guardian and the Job Shadow
teacher/supervisor.

Bedetailedinyourobservation.Comparetheclassroommanagement,differencesin
theagelevelabilitiescomparedwithyourcurrentplacement,whatactivitiesyou
observedtheteacherandstudentsdoing,andyourconclusionsfromtheexperience.

Formysecondjobshadow,IdecidedtomoveuptotheJuniorHighlevelwhereI
observedKristenHaines.Sheteachessixthgradeinformationalliteracy.Manypeople
areunawareoftheobjectiveofthisclassshedescribeditasteachingthestudentsto
bestrongnonfictionalreaders,obtaingoodresearchskillsandusefulstudyskillswhile
alsobeingeffective.WhenIfirstgottotheroom,Iwasquicktolearnthattheyhad
watchedavideopreviouslyaboutsearchandrescuedogscomparedtomilitarydogs.
Theobjectiveoftheweekwastounderstandthequestionandanswer
relationship.Thestudentswereaskedtocompleteaworksheetthathaddifferent
questionsaboutthedogsthattheywouldhavelearnedinthemovie.Aftertherewas
enoughtimegivenforeachofthestudentstocompletethepaper,Mrs.Hainescalled
onindividualstudentstoseewhattheiranswerswere.Aftershehadthestudents
answerwhattherightanswerswere,shegaveasituationthatwouldrequireoneofthe
dogsandhadsomeofthestudentssaywhichonetheywouldchooseandwhy.This
activityhelpedchanneleachindividualunderstandingofthedogswhichcanbean
effectiveformofassessment.
Goingbacktotheweeklyobjective,thenextactivitywasshehadthestudents
pickapieceapaperthateitherhadaquestionoratypeofquestion.Thetypesof
questionsare:allonmyown,thinkandsearch,authorandme.Oncethestudentsgot
theirpaper,thepeoplewhohadaquestionsrelatingtothedogshadtofindwhattypeof
questiontheywere.Oncepeoplewereintheirindividualgroups,shewentaroundto
eachandeverygroupandmadesurethatthestudentsunderstoodwhytheywere
wheretheywere.Afterthatwasdone,shethenhadthegroupworktogethertoanswer
thequestions.Toeliminatesomestudentspiggybackingonothers,theywentbackto
theirowndesksandwrotedowntheiranswersasanexitticket.
Overall,IrememberKristenHainesasateacherwhouseshumorandrelatability
tocontrolherclassroom.WhenIhadherasateacher,shedidntuseyellingandother
repercussionsaspunishmentsbutratherlaughedwithstudentsandmadethemwantto
makebetterchoices.Hertechniqueisnttoforcechildrenbuttoratherguidethem.She
usessuggestivequestionslike,areyousureyouwanttobemakingthatchoice?That
putthestudentsinapositiontomakethechoiceforthemselvesratherthanherdoingit.
ThisdiffersslightlyfromtheEarlyElementary.Althoughthestudentsare
expectedtomakegoodchoices,thereismoreallowanceforremindersandhelpwith
makingtherightchoice.BythetimethestudentsgettotheMiddleSchoolage,mostare
expectedtoknowrightfromwrong.
Mrs.Hainesspentmoretimeteachingratherthangivingfriendlyreminderswhich
canbehardintheEarlyElementary.Itwasastonishingtomethateventhoughthereis
onlyfouryearsseparatingmostofmystudentsandherstudents,herstudentswere

abletocomprehendverycomplexsituationsandhadthematuritytohandleserious
situationslikesearchandrescuedogsandmilitarydogs.
Overall,IamveryhappythatIwasabletoobserveKristenHaines.Throughout
thewholeclass,shetargetedalmosteverylearningstyleandalmosteveryBlooms
Taxonomylevel.Tome,agreatteacherdoesntjustdowhatheorsheshoulddobut
goesaboveandbeyondanddoeswhatheorshewantstodotherefore,becauseofmy
observationandhavingherasateacher,Icansaysheisagreatteacher.

Niceobservation!Ireallylikethatyouwereveryeasilyabletoseewhat
Mrs.Haineswasdoingbytakingwhatyouhavelearnedfromclassfirstsemester
andapplyittowhatyousawherdoforapropercompareandcontrast.Super!!
