Parent forum nights..parents would come into the school...and ask them what is important for you?

what do want
from your school? how can we help your kids?
what did they ask?
curriculum documents
they didnt know what they kids were learning and how to help them.

what did staff do...asked themselves...what can we do? how can we share?

SIP is 6 year plan..
current learning plan is around curriculum understanding across the staff.community
BE VISIBLE..out of the office.at the front..principal has many roles.data collection is formal and
informal.builds credibility
currently large number of underachieving students in reading.
vice-principal TEAM
she runs a literacy and math support group herself everyday! literacy is two small groups and math is 50 kids at
lunch.
announcements...celebrations, expectations.
BE READY TO WORK.
dont ask others to do things you wouldnt do yourself.the grunt work
modelling with the kids they work with.
learning with them.provide preps...she ran a french class for 6 weeks..had to earn their way back to the regular
classroom

...modelling it is marketing.if we believe this is a place of learning they we act that way.if we believe school is a
great place to be then we reflect that.
clear around messaging.IMAGE MATTERS.. we need to be ready to learn .on time ...have food (breakfast)
MORNING ENTRY...staff is on duty INSIDE.bell rings 15 mins before class and the students come into the
building at that time and get themselves ready and organized in the 15 mins so that at the last bell everyone is ready
to go and it is not the mass chaos we see now...GREAT IDEA

SHARED AND DEFINED UNDERSTANDING OF THE LITERACY BLOCK
what each piece of the literacy block is defined and established with common understanding..
CELEBRATE WITH PRINCIPAL AWARD each month
NON-NEGIOTABLE.late (cant be late).....students are always first, manners matter.athletic code of conduct
(cant play on team if not upholding academic standard)...but there are opportunities to redeem ..restorative
.restitution.need to own to it but the school helps.always offering a way back in..

LEARN TO LISTEN.door always open for parents, students and staff...opportunities to COMMUNITY CHAT. 7
pm to 8 pm.set parameters.no teacher names, not about your child.thinking whole school.

STUDENT FOCUS GROUP.what do I need to know to be a great principal at this school.spend some time to
learn our names
TIMETABLING.common time.
LEADERSHIP is open to all
DATA.reading charts, case management, attendance, EDI, parent surveys (feedback),
STAFF resistance..we are still working on what is best for students.so I (she) still needs information to establish
what resources we need, who needs support, how are we going to support them.so just need something.
FOCUS.keep focus in mind...and keep it TIGHT...dont expand too big.acknowledge ideas and good
suggestions ...work them in where we can.but the focus is.
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS KEEP EVERYONE INFORMED..her example about taking down awards and not
telling the community about her plan for them.they got really mad...she realized she should have shared her plan
and explained what she was doing
CHALLENGE OF PRACTICE is one sentence.everyone knows what they are working.all staff, all students, all
parents.
BE IN CLASSES, BE VISIBLE.
more rules, more policing...so maybe think about the rules.maybe the rule is PLAY WELL (not specifically DONT
PLAY on the HILL, STAY OFF THE FIELD ) etc..
As you build your SCHOOL PLAN.start small.set academic standards. they have strict adherence to APE,
COPS, at her school.
medical model..is it URGENT.is it FAST TRACK..is it A VISIT TO THE DOCTOR.? set your priorities.stick
with it.
