Consider Britain & American influences and


HOW and WHY Australian society was changed by this decade.
MUSIC:
- Introduction of the protest song -> Vietnam War.
SOCIAL:
- Australians began to disagree with the Vietnam War.
- The younger generation started to defy the older.
- Australians began to question and defy the government.
- Introduction of the mini-skirt trend resulted in the younger generation experimenting with drugs and essentially rebelling.
- The contraceptive pill was first introduced in 1961.
- Germaine Greer started voicing her feminist opinions.
- Significant change in the roles of women especially in terms of sporting activities.
ENTERTAINMENT:
- Television was introduced which established a new leisure activity that everyone enjoyed.
- Television resulted in more American influences via TV shows.
- Obesity toll started to kick in, more and more Australians started to have TV dinners.
SPORT:
- Australian became known to the rest of the world as a sporty nation.
- Major Australian sports included tennis, cricket and surfing.
- There was an image of a bronze Australian portrayed to the rest of the world.
- Strong belief in sportsmanship (do your best, doesnt matter if you win or lose fair play)
- Peter Norman participated in the 1968 Olympics, winning the record for Australian in the 200m, which still stands. He was known for
making a gesture towards black people during these Olympics, publicly defying Australias White Australian Policy. Because of this, he
was reprimanded for this action and therefore not allowed to participate in the next Olympics.

- Black civil rights movement in American spurs on Australian beliefs.


- There was a questioning of authority and government policies, institutions, older generations etc.
- Aboriginals gained rights.
- Freedom rides in Australia mirrored those in USA.
