At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. connect experiences (understanding of skills required for
sport) with characters represented in texts;
2. participate in discussions, developing supporting arguments,
sharing and evaluating information, expressing opinions and
justifying responses;
3. vary volume, tone and pace to present to their audience;
4. identify and describe qualities that have made Paralympians
successful.

Students provide any prior knowledge of J.K.Rowlings Harry
Potter books and the Paralympics through the opening
discussion.
In the classroom with desks positioned in groups.
1. Computers / tablets for research
2. Paralympian athlete profiles (Australian Paralympic
Committee, 2013).
3. Hand-out of Quidditch rules (Rowling, 2001)
Contingency:
Printed hand-outs on Paralympians
Time: 5 10 mins
Introduce the Paralympics and explain how athletes skills
can be applied to different activities.
Discuss whether characters and events from literature can
inform our interpretations of the world around us.
Explain the task:
In teams, the class is going to select 7 Paralympians to make
up a Quidditch team.

Body of the lesson

Time: 40 mins
Discussion:
What is Quidditch?
Students provide a brief explanation of the game.
How does the game work? Discuss rules. (Hand-out of
rules)
What does each of the roles involve?
What skills are needed for each position? (speed, agility,
attention to detail etc)

qualities.
[15 mins]
Group Work (4/5 students):
Each group is to select 7 Quidditch players from the
Paralympic Education Program website (Australian
Paralympic Committee, 2013) or from 10 Paralympians (in
the hand-out) and allocate them to specific Quidditch roles
having discussed which skills / qualities they consider most
important for the roles.
Each team should nominate someone to feed back their
selections to the class.

Concluding the
lesson

Feedback:
Each teams representative briefly feeds back their Quidditch
team to the class using a newscast style.
[10 mins]
Time: 10 mins
Discuss the differences between the team selections.
Discuss what information the students have learned about the
Paralympians.

Evaluation/Follow
up

Observation of and discussion with the students should


demonstrate whether students were actively engaged in the
task.
Listening to student feedback in the conclusion should
demonstrate whether the students perceived themselves to
have learned about the Paralympians.

Assessment would take place further into the unit.
